A man in a wheelchair ignited a home-made explosive device outside an arrivals exit at Beijing’s international airport about 6.24pm on Saturday, state media reported, injuring himself but no others.

The explosion at the arrival hall of Beijing's Capital International Airport shocked travellers and and filled Terminal 3 with smoke.

Local media reported that the victim has been rushed to hospital, but his condition remains unknown.

Police were investigating the incident, the official Xinhua news agency said.

China's state broadcaster CCTV said the man injured in the blast was 34-year-old Ji Zhongxing from Heze in Shandong Province.

He set off a home-made explosive device packed with gunpowder from fireworks, but there were no other casualties.
