[quote:Simple27:MV8yMzkxMDE5Xzk4NjAyMTQ2X0JFRTNENTk1] A BIG UNSTABLE SUNSPOT: Giant sunspot AR3190 is turning away from Earth. It's still dangerous. The reason why is shown in this magnetic map from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory: [imgur]https://imgur.com/nxDAubx[/imgur] The sunspot's primary dark core is actually a huge pole of negative (-) magnetism closely surrounded by multiple islands of positive (+) polarity. This is exactly how solar flares get started. When + and - bump together in close proximity, magnetic reconnection can cause tremendous explosions. AR3190 poses a threat for X-class solar flares. Even though AR3190 is not facing Earth, the broad spray of any X-flare will still illuminate our planet with X-rays and extreme UV radiation. Radio blackouts and other effects remain possible as long as we can see the departing sunspot. https://www.spaceweather.com/
I accidentally deleted the OP of this thread during some glitch issues on GLP this morning (10/30/17).
I will be posting some useful links in the next post to make it easier for those posting so you don't have to scroll through a massive OP. :)
I had to delete the first two comments on this thread to do so, but wanted to keep them so I've put them below.

I also would like to mention that I know this thread has MANY pages and that it can be somewhat intimidating to join/chime in on a long standing thread as a new member/AC (I've experienced it when I first joined GLP), but we are a VERY welcoming group to those who newly join us. We are a small family of sorts who are all mostly interested in the same earth-related topics (quakes/solar/volcanoes/weather/etc.) and share info on each of those topics as well as 'off-topic' discussions. We genuinely care for one another here and even when we do not agree with each other, we ALWAYS respect each other.
I truly enjoy when new folks join us here. All that I ask is to show respect. :)
