I still use it and so does my family. Absolute best for all chest problems and coughs. Mom uses it sometimes for asthma. It may not keep up with pneumonia though....I've never had it. http://frugallysustainable.com/2011/12/horehound-lozenges-homemade-remedy-for/ http://www.healthy.net/scr/mmedica.aspx?MTId=1&Id=226 You can buy Horehound cough drops at Walmart. It's an herb of the Mint family.
great information! I was just checking your links and apparantly, making your own coughdrops are not only super-cheap.... but also easy & quite tasty! <clipped from ^link^ above> Indications: Horehound is a valuable plant in the treatment of bronchitis where there is a non-productive cough. It combines the action of relaxing the smooth muscles of the bronchus whilst promoting mucus production and thus expectoration. It is used with benefit in the treatment of whooping cough. The bitter action stimulates the flow and secretion of bile from the gall-bladder, aiding digestion. Horehound is used externally to promote the healing of wounds. http://www.healthy.net/scr/mmedica.aspx?MTId=1&Id=226 ----- <clipped from ^link^ above> Horehound is a perennial herb from the mint family. Known for it’s bitter taste and incredible curative properties, it is used primarily in the treatment of respiratory and bronchial illnesses–such as sore throats, coughs, and asthma. (make your own cough drops - items needed - complete instructions/illustrations at link) Ingredients -1 cup dried horehound leaves -1 cup water -1 1/2 cup raw, local honey Equipment -stainless steel pot -cheesecloth -spoon -cookie sheet -candy thermometer (optional) http://frugallysustainable.com/2011/12/horehound-lozenges-homemade-remedy-for/ ----- this sounds like a very hearty & nearly impossible plant to kill - which puts it right up my alley! note: recipes for cough syrup & tea, as well as another (slightly different) recipe for home-made cough drops at link below. write it down! <snipped> Horehound brings to mind the old fashioned horehound candy that so many people remember fondly from their childhoods. But horehound, Marrubium vulgare, is an herb that can easily be grown in your garden. One plant is enough for a family and can be used not only for horehound drops, but also tea and homemade cough syrup. Horehound is very easy to grow and can actually become a pest if not watched carefully. It self-seeds readily and rapidly! The flowers should be cut BEFORE they dry and form seeds. Horehound is not picky about soil---except if it's wet and heavy. It can even grow in dry, rocky ground in full sun! The seed can be sown in the spring after the frost ends. The plant will bloom the second season, but can be harvested the first year since it's the leaves that are mainly used. http://oldfashionedliving.com/horehound.html ----- seeds for sale at link - 5,000 seeds $4.99 or 10,000 seeds $8.99 *plus lots of additional information <snipped> Flower Specifications: Season: Perennial USDA Zones: 4 - 8 Height: 18 - 24 inches Bloom Season: Summer Bloom Color: White Environment: Full Sun Soil Type: Moist, well-drained, pH 6.1 - 7.8 Deer Resistant: Yes Planting Directions: Temperature: 65F Average Germ Time: 2 - 3 weeks Light Required: No Depth: 1/4 inch Sowing Rate: 2 - 3 seeds per plant Moisture: Keep moist until germination Plant Spacing: 10 inches Care & Maintenance: See: Horehound http://www.outsidepride.com/seed/flower-seed/horehound-flower-seed.html ----- http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?ic=16_0&Find=Find&search_query=horehound&Find=Find&search_constraint=0&_be_switches=rmfield_product_badges_rmvalue_top_rated:off
Original Message
I was contributing to another thread (linked below) on the Madagascar pneumonic plague epidemic. It appears that this is really starting to spread.
There are many reported cases in/around Peru - one of which was a doctor who became infected after he was treating plague patients. It is unknown how many people he may have infected before he realized he was contagious.
There's also an unknown respiratory illness that's been reported near Houston, Texas (Montgomery County) which has resulted in 4 deaths thus far. Patients are said to have flu-like/pneumonia symptoms yet tested negative for the flu.
Here's the original thread:
Thread: NOW: Two PNEUMONIC plague cases have been found in Madagascar
I'll quote my comments below - and continue reporting any updates I find on this thread.
Heads up....
