Happy Hanukkah / Chanukah !!!
Today is the beginning of the eight-day "festival of light" that begins on
the eve of the 25th of the Jewish month of Kislev -- which celebrates the triumph
of light over darkness, of purity over adulteration, of spirituality over
materiality.
21+ centuries ago, the Holy Land was ruled by the Syrian-Greeks who sought
to forcefully Hellenize the people of Israel. Against all odds, a small
band of faithful Jews opened a can of whoop-ass on one of the mightiest
armies on earth, forced the Greeks from the land and reclaimed the Holy
Temple in Jerusalem. Soon there after it was rededicated to the service of
God.
When the Jews sought to light the Temple's multi-branched menorah, they
found only a one day supply of oil. By God's grace, that one day supply
burned for 8 days, allowing a new supply of ritually pure oil to be made.
As with most Jewish holidays, Hanukkah follows a common celebratory pattern:
They tried to kill us,
We survived,
Lets eat!
Hanukkah is also a time a family gatherings, gift giving and sumptuous
meals. It is also a time of spiritual reflection, reconciliation and the
expression of tremendous gratitude to God for sustaining the Jewish people,
yet again, from what would appear to be insurmountable challenges.
