[quote:whatsTRUTH:MV8zODk5NTY0XzcwMjgyNjA1X0E1QjQwRjBE] [quote:Truth 1818:MV8zODk5NTY0XzcwMjgyNTAwX0Q3OTg0NURC] My 97 y.o. aunt JUST donated precious relics of our family's history to the museum. Like America, Brasil acquired 50-60 MILLION European immigrants from the 1850's to the 1920's, including my grandmother & grandfather. Brasil isn't what most people in America think it is. They aren't "Latinos" inasmuch as Americans from America whose ancestors came from europe aren't "latinos" either. 20-30 MILLION GERMANS emigrated to Brasil in that period. 50,000 American "Rebels" - Southerners from America immigrated to Brasil in the 1870's - REFUSING to lose the war here and give up their slaves. One of the most famous 'rock & rollers' of Brasil, since the mid 1960's is a woman named "Rita Lee" - she is related to Robert E. Lee, president of the Southern Rebel States during the American civil war. Those American-Brasileans stayed in Brasil, kept their culture and their language until today. They live mainly in a town called "Americana" near the largest city in S.America, 'St. Paul - Sao Paulo. Just to let people know that these people have a TON of european blood in them, Italians, Germans, Spain-ish, Portuguese, English, Irish, Scandinavian. There are entire towns in Southern Brasil where the people are blond with blue eyes and are German-Brasileans! One of the LARGEST Oktoberfests in the world is held there. My family's history just went up in flames. My grandfather opened a taylor shop on the Avenida Rio Branco in 1901!!! They were just off the boat from europe, escaping one of the wars. Rio Branco is the main wide thoroughfare in the business district in downtown Rio, like the Manhattan area of rio with skyscrapers now. My uncle was CONSCRIPTED by the newly minted U.S. AIR FORCE in 1943 - to help design fighter aircraft/engines for America during the war. He was given IMMEDIATE U.S. citizenship and was based in Los Angeles. My father & mother applied for U.S. citizenship soon after and were granted their dream, to live and work in America and be productive members of society. My father & uncle were both U.S. WWII VETS! They both served in both the Army & the Air Force with honorable discharges! Brasil needs to improve, that is known. I was born here, I am a PROUD citizen of the USA and have been on GLP since 1999! :spock:
Thank you much for sharing. Truly sorry for the losses that have happened to you.
