Original Message Back when Bill Clinton was president, you could go out on Halloween and it was rare to find a house that wasn't participating in the customary trick or treat.

Well, last night I took my kids out and I'd estimate about 1/10 homes participated.

To be fair, I realize a large majority of those homes are owned by people who trick or treated when they were kids, but I also know there are countless immigrants who have moved into the neighborhood. Not a single non-white homeowner answered the door the entire evening.

I do believe that is telling.

It was also very sad to walk down a dark street with several porch lights out.

Look, it's not about "getting free candy". I don't even let my kids eat the stuff except a few pieces, it's about the community and the participating and saying hi to the neighbors. It's a community bond, and one that appears to be disappearing.

But then it makes sense, how can customs and traditions continue if you replace the people who uphold those customs and traditions?
