Sure we all save money in our 401Ks or IRAs (a form of prepping)...But now I'm thinking about a little house in a red state with no state income taxes where I can set up a little gold mine in my back yard and dig up a half an ounce a gold per day (just for shits & giggles). Then go fishing :banana2: South Dakota is a darn good possibility! - MC
South Dakota LOOKS good now but in SHTF conditions you had better be able to chop ten cords of wood and sleep with one eye open against theft and mayhem. I lived there for two winters and it made my previous state Iowa look like the tropics. The winters are effing brutal. Extinction level events. -5°F as the high temperature for days in a row, with 40 mph winds as the standard daily fare. It doesn't just snow, it snows SIDEWAYS. I lived in Iowa for 15 years before SD and I have never been so cold for so long in my life as I was in SD... and this was WITH electricity and WITH natural gas heat and a thermostat. Good luck after an EMP. Also you will need to seriously consider the impact of your neighbors the Native Americans, mostly Lakota and Dakota tribes. They tend to have a very different concept of "private ownership" and play by an entirely unfamiliar set of rules. The ones that drink can be violent and hateful. I had my life threatened more than once by agro drunks, and I'm one of the nicest people you could ever meet. There is gold and silver in the Idaho panhandle, and the people here are a lot easier to cooperate with. Winters are surprisingly mild. Or choose a different red state like Oklahoma or Alabama or the mountains of South Carolina. Why not have a little drive around the country this spring while gas prices are still low, camp out and get a feel for where you feel at home. South Dakota is colder than Alaska. It would be one of my last places on my list for a place to settle. Could not wait to leave that place.
Thanks for the info! I'm in Minnesota so the winters don't scare me...but I didn't know about the injuns there. I know alcohol does not agree with them!
Continuation of another thread of wonderful people with the best ever ideas for practical prepping even for those with little money.
We discuss power outages including CME and EMP, heating and cooking methods, first aid, foods; we run disaster scenarios to see if we know what to do.
This is probably the only prepping thread a person would need, whether long-time prepper here to share, or newbie prepper here to learn and everyone in between.
