It’s better to be safe than sorry and the incubation periods for some water borne illness’s are upwards of a month. Yes, bad water can kill you. Also you cannot see a bacteria or virus! Water Sources • Vegetation: Questionable. Depending on type of plant or tree and source of water. • Streams or Moving Water: Usually safe. • Ponds & Lakes: Stagnant (danger!). • Rainwater: Chemicals in the air. Distilled. • Ice or snow: Chemicals in the air. (Melt first or will lower your body temp.) Stagnant Water: Stagnant water can be dangerous for drinking because it provides a better incubator than running water for many kinds of bacteria and parasites. Stagnant water is often contaminated with human and animal feces, particularly in areas of low rain. Other risks could include some insect species that lay eggs in water such as Mosquito larvae. Acquiring Water from a Tree: One must exercise caution when getting water from any plant as some may be poisonous or sprayed with chemicals. Please do not try this unless you are sure the source is nontoxic. Do not attempt near a roadway or fecal matter. What you need: A large bag, Rubber bands, tape or zip ties. 1. Find a tree that is healthy, and looks green.. 2. Find a branch that has a lot of healthy leaves on it. 3. Take the bag and some zip ties. 4. Put the branch into the bag, allowing some material to hang below the tree. 5. Wrap the zip tight around the edge of the bag sealing the edge of the bag around the tree. 6. Wait, and over time, the tree will transpire water, which will be caught by the plastic bag, and gather in the bottom. Note: Leaves will die if this is done for an extended period. This does not generate a lot of water so it must be repeated several times. Please purify all water. Acquiring Water from Heavy Dew: One must exercise caution when getting water from any plant as some may be poisonous or sprayed with chemicals. Please do not try this unless you are sure the source is nontoxic. Do not attempt near a roadway or fecal matter. What you need: Cloth (a shamwow was suggested) 1. Attach cloth to areas of the knee and below depending on height of vegetation. 2. Walk through the dew as it is being collected on the cloth. 3. Wring out cloth into a cup or similar object. 4. Repeat. Note: Upwards on a gallon an hour of water acquired. Essentially distilled water is procured because minerals are removed when water evaporates. Signs of Tainted Water • Smells bad • Milky like Discoloration • Unpleasant Taste • Stickiness Water Purification Methods Egyptian Well – If you are obtaining your water from a pond or stream you can filter the water a bit without even pulling it from the ground. Travel around your water source and try to find the sandiest shoreline possible. Using any tools you may have for digging and dig a hole several feet from the water source. Keep digging until you hit the water line, the depth at which water will begin to seep upward into your hole. Continue digging until the hole is deep enough into which you can dip a container and retrieve the water. If this isn’t possible use a piece of cloth to soak up the water and squeeze it out into a container. Leave it alone – Set out a plastic bottle filled with murky water for a little while and you will notice that some undesirable contents will settle at the bottom. Pour out the water on top remove the rest and repeat if needed. Distillation - Distillation involves boiling water and then condensing the steam into a clean container. This keeps all the materials that do not evaporate in the bottom of your pot containing the boiling water. Distillation removes all the minerals from your water which some scientists and doctors think you need. Sunlight Radiation – I suggest a #2 clear plastic container or a similar thick durable plastic up to 3 liters. Thin, soft plastics leech chemicals into your drinking water after heat exposure. This method will only remove germs from your water so you will have to filter it to remove the chemicals. Place the container in the sun for 6 hours or up to 10 for maximum effectiveness. Place the container so it can get as much sun exposure as possible. The UV rays of the Sun are what kill the bacteria so the temperature does not matter. Water Purification Tablets – Use as directed. Iodine - Placing 5 drops of 2 percent tincture of iodine in a canteen full of clear water. If the canteen is full of cloudy or cold water, use 10 drops. (Let the canteen of water stand for 30 minutes before drinking.) Boiling – At least 1 minute. Increase to 3 minutes for high elevation and up to 10 for maximum effectiveness. Can be done alone or with a filter but please filter first so you do not ingest the debris. This method also makes the water flat or removes the air from it. It will taste funny so to remedy this you will need to shake it up in a bottle for a little while. Obtaining Charcoal You can get charcoal from any hardwood coals. All you need to do is remove the organic materials from the hardwood and you have charcoal. Care will need to be taken when making your charcoal so you don’t burn it up. Make a fire and simply put a coffee can over the top of it so it does not burn. Creating your own Water Filters What you need: A water bottle, sand, gravel or rock (various sizes), grass, cotton, or cloth, a coffee filter and charcoal. 1. Cut the bottom off a water bottle discard it. Puncture a hole in the bottle's lid carefully. 2. Place cotton balls at the neck of the half-bottle. Followed by charcoal. 3. Place a layer of fine-grain sand over the charcoal. Put some gravel into your bottle starting with the smaller rocks first. Place a coffee filter on top of the cotton, sand and gravel layers. 4. You must prime it before use. Run some water through it until it runs clear. Note: Many of these materials may be substituted for other things. Drinking Contaminated Water I have found over 50 water borne diseases. Some are mild and some are terrible. The SARS virus, Dysentery, and Botulism just to name a few common diseases that come from unsanitary water. Symptoms from drinking contaminated drinking water can include abdominal discomfort, fatigue, weight loss, diarrhea, fever, loss of appetite, substantial loss of weight, bloating, increased gas, nausea, cramps, vomiting, muscle aches, blood in urine, rash, chills, asthmatic attack, neurological manifestations, liver enlargement, itching around the anus, nervous manifestation, intracranial tension, dry mouth, blurred vision, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, slurred speech, nose bleeding, profuse sweating, sore throat, and finally spastic paralysis. Levels of contaminants in drinking water are seldom high enough to cause immediate health effects. Incubation periods range from immediate to 28 days for Hepatitis A. In developing countries four-fifths of all the illnesses are caused by water-borne diseases, with diarrhea being the leading cause of childhood death. If you swallow a leech, it can hook onto the throat passage or inside the nose. It will suck blood, create a wound, and move to another area. Each bleeding wound may become infected. 1.8 million Deaths annually are credited to drinking contaminated water worldwide. Note on Distilled Water I suggest only using distilled water to detox your body or in survival situations because it lacks minerals. The water will actually pull it from your body some speculate.
Excellent! :Nice post2:
Continuation of another thread of wonderful people with the best ever ideas for practical prepping even for those with little money.
We discuss power outages including CME and EMP, heating and cooking methods, first aid, foods; we run disaster scenarios to see if we know what to do.
This is probably the only prepping thread a person would need, whether long-time prepper here to share, or newbie prepper here to learn and everyone in between.
Welcome!! Join us! Learn! Teach! Enjoy!!
