Original Message Read somewhere that the magpies like to eat the scarabs (black beetles). So we have been collecting them at night and feeding them to Midge Magpie when she comes around for food. She loves them, but I can’t stop thinking there must be a problem. These poor beetles sit in a container milling about all night, just waiting to die.

They’re pests, apparently, but I feel bad. Also, it’s likely good nutrition for the baby magpie that Midge is feeding. Do you think there is some kind of ancient Egyptian curse??

There’s a cool song

Other scarabs and cockchafer larvae, including the yellowheaded cockchafer, redheaded pasture cockchafer and other pasture scarabs.

Adults can be confused with redheaded cockchafer and some dung beetles.”
