Brand new Ross in our town was nearly empty after first shutdown. Also I noticed the one year old Hobby Lobby here has ALL their seasonal shit out, from every season. I was guessing they’re also going to close down. There go some jobs... that locals didn’t have for very long. And I forgot, our JCP is going out of business too. Before these stores came all there was were thrift stores. So back to square one... thrift stores + Walmart.
I'm not finding things at Walmart. I was looking for sheets, and their selection was dismal. Someone said that they had all been bought to make masks. I don't believe that. The supply lines have been upset or severed.
I can explain some of this. No need to panic. My part time job is in retail. When we reopened just less than a month ago there was still stock in the back that needed to be put out. Upon reopening with a skeleton crew and limited hours, some of that has still not been put out. We are working with such a small staff it is hard to cover breaks at times. Many stores still have a lot of fall/winter clothes out on vlearance. With every one closed for over two months, it could not be sold. With Covid shipments from overseas were halted and import hubs being clised and No new merchandise coming in to the warehouses, so what was there is what we have. Many manufacturers overseas were also closed. That major disruption in the supply chain world wide has slowed or stopped new manufacturing. You also now have warehouses with limited staff and those are slowly viming back. It is going to take tume to get these things back to normal. I knew going into this mess it would take months to get things back to normal and restocked as these items don't appear out of thin air. Sheets being bought for maskdy...very true. Closely woven fabric available at the big box stores when others were closed and not available, many did resort to using sheets to make masks, plus it is less expensive to use those. I havr a friend that is still making masks non stop and this is what she resorted to. Noe, stores like Ross, TJ Maxx and Marshalls never have certain things on a regular basis. They purchase large quantities at a deeply discounted price. That is why if you shop at those stores you know if you see something you buy it because if you go back for it, it may not be there and it won't come back because that is what they got. It isn't necessarily doom, it is taking time for supply chains and manufacturing u to get back up and running.
Most retailers are preparing to go out of business. They are self-liquidating because cost and they know they only have a narrow "re-open" window to do it.
And...
Because the big liquidator companies are overwhelmed and can't move the product to other retailers because there are no
other
retailers now.
They can't even load it and ship it to dump it in Africa or South America.
So this is why.
