At 1 am CDT, Hurricane #Laura has made landfall in southwestern Louisiana near Cameron as a category 4 #hurricane. Maximum sustained winds were 150 mph, with a minimum central pressure of 938 mb. Potentially catastrophic impacts will continue.

#HurricaneLaura's maximum sustained winds have increased from 75mph to 140mph in the past 24hr. That's ties the record for the largest 24hr rate of intensification (65 mph in 24 hr) for a tropical cyclone o/the Gulf of Mexico (Karl in 2010). Historical stats via @philklotzbach

NHC updated info:

Upto 20 feet of storm surge

Unsurvivable storm surge with large and destructive waves will causecatastrophic damage from Sea Rim State Park, Texas, to IntracoastalCity, Louisiana, including Calcasieu and Sabine Lakes. This surge could penetrate up to 40 miles inland from the immediate coastline, and flood waters will not fully recede for several days after the storm.

ECMWF 12z arrived even stronger at 937 mb pressure which is typical of Category 4+ hurricanes.

Landfall just east of Galveston Bay.

Models show two storms headed for New Orleans and one of them a Category 4

NOAA's hurricane model the HWRF, which is a specialized model for forecasting hurricane intensity, estimates Laura will be a category 4 storm.
