I walk all over and for the past few months, there have been 1/10th of the active people I usually see. At first, I thought it was because people were happy to take summer vacations and everyone took the chance to run away. Then school started and I guessed everyone was back at work or in school. I see parents in school pickup line but it’s not as long as it used to be. It’s about 1/3 shorter. Noticed it yesterday when I went for a 5pm walk and there wasn’t another soul around. No kids at the park. No basketball. No runners. So very creepy.
word is hotels are having problems too. ppl are not traveling or on vacation to fill the rooms.
My airbnb in Florida is booked solid. No single family rentals available. And yet the traffic seems sparse. I really need to think this through. I am 66, walk my entire neighborhood and talk to neighbors daily. Know all the reasons people are moving in and out. Still I think y'all are onto something huge. As I said, local scumbags are being "removed" due to varying causes. New people move in. But the feel is different.
How are so many places understaffed when unemployment and eviction moratoriums are gone?
I don’t believe that many people are suddenly hiding now because of CoVid and not working just waiting to get evicted. Even fast food is paying $15 an hour in states where it’s not the mandatory minimum wage - and heroic grocery store workers stayed on the job at the height of the fear pandemic.
Why would all those people not be working now? What are all these mysterious ‘better jobs’ they left for?
Are the supply shortages really because so many people are MIA?
