[quote:GrimReaper20:MV80OTU0NDg0XzkwNTk5NjA3XzQ5NUM1N0JE] Sarno's method 100% cured me of unimaginable back pain 20 years ago, to the point where I would LITERALLY, at times be on the floor with my back locked up in a spasm as tight as you can make a fist. After unsuccessfully going to a couple of the top sports medicine doctors in NYC, including one who worked for the NY Jets....and others who tried telling me the ergonomics of my workspace was causing it (WTF)...not to mention MRI's, chiropractors...I was miserable. On a whim, my buddy said "you should go to that back doctor Howard Stern always talks about" I looked into it and ended up reading his book (something like) "Healing Back Pain, The Mind Body Connection"....and literally within days...100% cured without a single relapse in 20 years. I kid you not, my back was so bad I couldn't even bend over to lift up the damn toilet seat to piss without pain. I couldn't finish a round of golf without being in total agony. Sarno noticed in thousands of patients who suffered these symptoms, nearly all fit a similar profile of person: typically young, male, over-achiever, undergoing major life change or stress...that was me. I was helping to care for a parent who was stricken with cancer...selling 2 houses and buying a new house, my wife pregnant with out 1st child...and a high-paying job in NYC that was bought by an equity firm where the writing was on the wall that the gravy-train was just about over. OH, and on top of that, a 4 hour commute to/from Manhattan where I was working at the time. Sarno called it TMS (I think)...tension mitosis syndrome...where the body & subconscious tries to "protect" the mind from focusing on the outside stress, it creates a "diversion" in the form of a back or neck pain so the person instead focuses on that. How is it solved? Simply by realizing it's happening....it sounds too simple, but I swear to God it's 100% true and cured me 100% from the most horrible, chronic back pain you could possibly imagine. Look up the book on Amazon and read the thousands of reviews...how can they ALL be bullshit? I'm telling you...it's not. I hope this helps EDIT: By the way....I gave this book to a buddy about a year after I was cured who was having the same type of issues in his neck muscles...he also swears he was 100% cured as well and he then gave the book to a relative of his. We both swear we were cured by it [/quote]

There are no posts on GLP about the late Dr. John Sarno and his approach to healing chronic back pain (and other types of pain).
Pain originates in the mind, so the fix lies in talking the mind down off the ledge. That's the basic idea. Becoming aware of this, he said, causes pain to stop.
I really respect John Stoessel, and he swears Sarno cured his back pain of many years just by talking to him. He said in an interview that he's embarassed by the fact that it worked, especially since he's always been so rational and a skeptic of most woo-woo stuff.
Howard Stern and Larry David are two other high profile people who have spoken out about Sarno as if he were a miracle worker.
Have any of you read his books? Any success stories out there to report, or is this all foolishness?
I welcome all feedback and/or related discussions about healing back pain WITHOUT big pharma or surgical interventions.
