[quote:Anonymous Coward 80704211:MV81MDIwMjkxXzkxOTQ3MjUyXzNGNDY3MDJB] [quote:hellno2:MV81MDIwMjkxXzkxOTQ3MDgxXzEwNjU4QkIz] I asked in a dharma/hinduism/buddhism group, "If karma is real, how can horrible people get rich and powerful?" Someone responded: [face=Verdana]Many "bad" people who attained riches and power have much karmic debt. Good karma=closer to liberation not necessarily material wealth. They are farther from liberation than most people. And you can see it. They will not attain liberation before anyone who is "good". Some perhaps are so enslaved by this illusion that they could only hope to be brought down and humbled by the grace of the divine. We aren't talking about "good" people with wealth here, we are talking about corrupt people with seemingly endless power in this illusion.[/face] Another responded: Good merit in their past life __________________________________________ I admittedly don't know much about karma.. realized when a friend asked me what I knew about it the other day. My simple understanding is that fate smiles on you when you do something good or interesting. Many cultures have different words for a similar concept... for example I tell people that it's good luck to save a turtle. Whether it's true is for you to decide... could even be a placebo effect or self-fulfilling prophecy.
There is much debate about what is good and what is bad...the two often become entangled. Wealth and power is definitely not something to be desired. It does not bring happiness or peace. What is it, or what is YOUR understanding of it?
Many understand it to be a balancing of energy... what comes around...goes around. Cause and effect. For every action there is an equal opposite reaction. You reap what you sow.
The original Sanskrit meaning of the word we have as "Karma " simply means "doing."
So what are your thoughts on this concept that has been acknowledged and even respected by virtually every nationality, as well as every religion, including Christians?
What does the understanding of "doing" mean to YOU?
