If you heard that rustle in the grass and thought it was a predator, but it only the wind, you didn't lose much by taking the necessary precautions. Because of this cognitive bias, human primates have evolved to assign human attributes (gods) to inanimate objects. Early on superstitious people would assign gods to the wind, the sky, the trees, the ocean, etc. Then it got narrowed down a bit so that there was a location for the divine (like Olympus) but still several gods. Then it got narrowed down again to one god, and they're getting closer to the real number all the time. [/quote]
