When I finished school, I worked with a guy who at 18 was told to join the army and spent 6 months doing training and then 18 months doing various jobs in the army. The government cancelled national service in 1963. Requirement was ALL able bodied men between 18 and 30 to do 2 years service. During WW2 you could also be conscripted to work down a coal mine to meet national demands for coal used by factories and homes around the country. [/quote]
