EAST GREENBUSH - A man shot by a police SWAT team after he opened fire at State Police during a traffic stop on Interstate 90 was on life support today, authorities said.

The unidentified man paid a Yellow Cab driver in Hartford, Conn., for the ride that ended in the shootout on the interstate, Rensselaer County District Attorney Richard McNally said.

The cab was westbound on the interstate when an eastbound trooper spotted it speeding at about 11:55 a.m.. The trooper turned around and pursued the cab and stopped it.

While the trooper was talking to the driver, the passenger started shooting, McNally said.

The Southern Rensselaer County SWAT team was training nearby when the shootout started, McNally said. The officers responded.

McNally said it was his understanding that one of the SWAT team members shot the man, who had fled from the cab into the woods near the interstate about one mile west of Exit 10.

The man is on life support at Albany Medical Center Hospital, where he was taken after being shot.

The interstate was closed in both directions as investigators tried to manage the scene.

No police officers were injured during the exchange of fire. None of the people on the interstate who fled their cars during the shooting were hurt, authorities said.

Several drivers saw the bedlam between exits 10 and 11 on the eastbound lanes, which head toward Massachusetts.

One driver described what started with a traffic delay and turned into terrified motorists and passengers fleeing from the sound of gunshots. Some backed up, others crossed the snowy medium to go in the other direction and others left their vehicles and ran, he said.

The driver told the Times Union he was sitting in traffic, heading to work at Crossgates Mall, when traffic was stalled. That soon changed when he heard. "Pop! Pop! Pop!"

"I thought maybe it's a bear they have to euthanize," he said. "Then people are starting to get out of their cars ... it was total chaos."

East Greenbush Town Supervisor Rick McCabe said he understands, after talking with police, that the alleged gunman traveled to New York in a cab from Connecticut.

"From a town perspective, its something you see on TV," McCabe said. "You dont expect it to happen in your neighborhood."

A Delmar couple coming back from the Berkshires with their beagles were stopped in traffic when they saw a state trooper running past cars and an SUV closing off lanes.

"It was pretty frightening," said Devin McKeon, traveling with his wife Sacha, both 24. They heard "a volley of shots" and saw people running.

A helicopter searched the woods near I-90 for some time after the incident. The highway was blocked for several hours with police tape at mile marker 11.3.
