Something Interesting on Super Volcanoes
Got on the phone with a friend of mine today, and as usual the topic turned to volcanoes (Being in Costa Rica he´s concerned about visiting because we are in the pacific ring of fire....)

Anyway, something interesting came up in the conversation thought I´d share..

1. Yes, the super volcanoes are going to blow, but no time soon.

2. A Nuclear Blast would not set off Yellowstone or any other super volcano.

3. Mexico City is the crater of a volcano :) Not new news, but interesting how many people will go to mexico city no qualms or fears and yet they land in the middle of a volcanoe. Go figure.

4. The Super Volcanoes are a NELE for those of you that know what that means, for those that don´t Near Extinction Level Event

However, this day in age it won´t be such a big deal, well to those in the immediate vicinity yes, but in terms of ash cloud we needn´t worry about a nuclear winter.

You´ve all heard and seen something about cloud seeding I´m assuming, it´s been all over the discovery channel lately.

Anyway how this fits in is that within a couple of hours planes can be retro-fitted with this chemical mixture that will dissipate (not the right word, but oh well) the ash clouds, I mean that they will force the clouds of ash to the ground, covering the affected areas with tons of ash, but containing the effects.

So it will be a tragedy, but it will not end the world.

Damn, here I was hoping for the next ice age, and now technology is going to deprive me of it.

So, all those that are worried about the super volcanoes, just move to the opposite coast, get earthquake proofed, and enjoy the light show.

Although most reasonable estimates have one super volcano going off not less than 300 years from now...

Just one thing: how do you know this? and how true/effective is this?

848, why Ohio? I did read in the paper that they´ve discovered a crater near Serpent Mound, that was created by an impact of some sorts

It´s still in the experimental stage, everything is until put to the field in combat.

How effective?

Between 50 and 68% effective (estimated and in small tests), which will give the rest of us a fighting chance.

I´m trying to find the next time that Discovery will show the episode. (where my friend got the information)

The only downfall of it I can see is that anyone under the area of ash at first will get burried in the stuff...

Re: Something Interesting on Super Volcanoes
Planes fly over the ash cloud and wet it with something to force it to the ground? Have we invented new planes that can fly that high - I don't think so.

And what are you spraying? Cloud seeding works by dissipating tiny particles in clouds. But an ash cloud is a great heap of tiny particles already.

I think its past your bedtime. Go back to sleep and dream some more.

Re: Something Interesting on Super Volcanoes
Everyone seems to be so worried bout Yellowstone as if its the only Supervolcano on earth ,it isn't there is another that is showing more and more signs everyday that it is waking up this one erupts every 10 - 12,000 years ,its about 400 miles from London as the crow flies ,and its degassing now .

This one can devestate the same as Yellowstone it can have about the same death total ,it can also pump enough ash into the atmosphere to lower the worlds temp and bring on another iceage .

You STILL worried about Yellowstone ???

So the air is full of hot ash, sulphur etc.. and planes are gonna take off and disperse that shit?

Don't think that's possible. The ash would clog up their engines pretty quick.

Mexico city was built on an ancient lake bed, which is why most of the city has been sinking ever since they started building heavy on it
