uhm, dogs and cats lick their babies bottoms to stimulate them to go to the bathroom.

Since kittens and puppies and a lot of other animal babies can't look after themselves, Momma's gotta do it.

I worked for a man who had a German Sheppard that literally ate horse shit. This dog would go behind the horses and eat their shit. I had to quit that job. I couldn't stomach it.

It is an instinctual thing of animals to keep the area clean of feces so that predators cannot sniff them out.

No they do not. If a dog is doing that she is not getting nourishment sufficient to nurse her puppies. Puppies should be fed even while they are nursing and mama needs a really good diet too. Perhaps you sould keep her area cleaner.

Actually it's just the fact that they're dogs that they eat doo, doo. And anything else for that matter.

My dog would clean out the cat box for us, and rid our trash cans of any uhhmm, well, used ladies monthly supplies.

Oh, and he loved razers.

The fact is that ALL animals need bacteria in their stomach so they can digest their food.

NO MAMMAL can digest milk!!!! That is why we have Lactobacillus in our gut - and the actual bugs are almost identical between species (they are interchangable).

This also applies to humans - we can be TOO CLEAN!!!

If uou don't give babies the stomach bugs, they develop allergies and diseases - as evidenced where children who play in the dirt (and eat some) hardly ever get sick, but those who are kept pure and clean suffer all sorts of nasties.

Where I come from, the term "shit eating dog" applies to something worthless.

Yes dogs have taste-buds - they can be picky about the foods they eat.

I have never eaten fecal matter, and I would wager you haven't as well. So we do not know if feces taste like shit or not.

You would have to ask those who do eat fecal matter what it tastes like. Yes there are people who do/have they do it mostly for sexual pleasure. BTW its called coprophilia.

Considering what I have seen dogs eat, from 1 week old skunk (road kill) to fecal matter they obviously have a different understanding of what tastes good.

Dogs do eat fecal matter to keep predators away, they will eat their litter's fecal matter and then have their own bowel movements away from the litter.

If you want to stop this behavior then you need to be diligent and clean up right after a pup goes.

Also, Momma Dogs will also eat the weaker/sicker individuals of her litter, for the same reason, to keep predators at bay. Predators can smell most kinds of sickness (thus dogs can sniff out cancer and other unseen disease that we humans can not smell).

Pups eat poo for bacteria they need to digest their food. I am glad they grow out of it though.

Cats eat a very high protein diet so their poop is somewhat nutritious. Most dogs will eat catshit.
