Kill Prostate Cancer with a VIRUS
If I should be so unfortunate to have Prostate Cancer, I for one will not be looking for a virus to help me out ...

Canadian researchers are working on a fascinating new way to treat prostate cancer using viruses. And while it's still early days, they say their research opens the door to more effective cancer therapies with fewer side effects.

The treatment uses something called oncolytic viruses, which are viruses that seek out cancer cells, invade them and destroy them.

While there are a few naturally-occurring oncolytic viruses, in the last decade scientists have been studying how to genetically engineer them to attack specific cancer tumours.

The idea is that the viruses will attack cancer cells while leaving healthy tissues alone, offering an alternative to current cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, which destroy healthy cells as they work.

The new therapy being developed by Alberta researchers uses a reovirus, from a family of common viruses that cause mild, even undetectable, stomach and respiratory illnesses.

The virus they use has already shown potential to attack many types of cancer cells, including lymphoid, ovarian, and breast cancer. To test how well it worked against prostate cancer, researchers led by Dr. Don Morris, a medical oncologist in the Department of Oncology at the Tom Baker Cancer Center in Calgary, recruited six men for a Phase 1 trial.

All the men had early-stage, treatable prostate cancer. Researchers took the reovirus and injected it into a suitable cancer nodule within each man's prostate.

Three weeks later, Morris and colleagues removed the men's prostates as part of the patient's standard treatment. They then analyzed the tissue to see how well the reovirus worked.

"When we first saw these results, the safety and efficacy activity in human patients, ecstatic would be the word," Morris told CTV News. "The success in the first six patients' trial was everything we hoped for and perhaps more."

They found that in that short time, the virus appeared to dstroy a number of the cancer cells, while also sending out copies of itself to attack more cancer cells.

And, to the relief of researchers, the virus stayed confined to cancer cells and didn't spread into normal tissue. What's more, the treatment caused only modest side effects, such as mild flu-like symptoms.

The results are published in Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

The researchers say their hope is that with longer study, the virus therapy will allow doctors to shrink tumours so that they can be more effectively treated by chemotherapy. The therapy might also mean a reduction in the number of men who need prostate removal surgery, which can often bring bad side effects, such as incontinence and impotence.

The Calgary researchers are now hoping for a longer and larger study.

"It strikes me as a very innocent method to study in patients, and I would be very happy to move forward with a bigger trial," says study co-author Dr. Bryan Donnelly, a surgical oncologist at the University of Calgary.

Robert Clarke, a professor of oncology at Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University and an editorial board member of Cancer Research, said he believes this study is worthy of subsequent clinical trials.

"I think this is an interesting approach," said Clarke, who was not associated with this study.

"There is not a lot done in oncolytics, but clearly it is an area that is getting increasing attention, and we need everything we can get our hands on to make a difference in these patients."

Funding for the research was provided by the Alberta Cancer Foundation, the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada, and Oncolytics Biotech Inc.

Oncolytics Biotech is now studying the reovirus on other forms of cancer, such as those that affect the head and neck, liver cancer, even breast and brain tumours.

I'll say this one more time. What good does this do anyone? Notice like all these things it's still in the "research" stage and will remain in the "research" stage until hell freezes over. As long as the government keeps funding these jerkoffs with tons of research grant money they will never find anything that would threaten their funding and a cure for cancer would certainly do just that.

I treat myself all naturally anyways ... I wouldn't even think of a virus to kill Prostate Cancer .... can you imagine if they took a % of the funds used for research and gave everybody a 5 year supply of Vitamin D3. I can guarantee they would save on health costs many times over for the price of D3. Not enough $$ in it for them to do such a noble deed of course !

Re: Kill Prostate Cancer with a VIRUS
Go to the website of Oncolyticsbiotech.com and look at the investor presentation. There are photographs of what the virus has done to terminally ill head and neck cancer patients - before and after shots. Look at them and ask yourself if you were in the before picture if you would take Reolysin. If you are honest with yourself you would say yes I would take Reolysin. Reolysin can treat 2/3rds to 3/4 of all cancers and the most virulent metastatic ones are the ones best treated by Reovirus. Two to three years to approval and then almost universal use because: it is extremely cheap to produce, it is synergistically effective with existing cancer therapies (makes them work better), it attacks the primary and more importantly the metastatic tumors all over the body, it is non-toxic to the body with only mild flu like symptoms at most, it has been shown in the lab to not only kill the cancer cells but also cancer stem cells, it causes secondary immune responses when it destroys cancer cells by allowing the immune system to identify and attack cancer cells and it is harmless to normal cells. According to the President of the company they are seeing a similar response rate accross all of the cancer indications they are currently in trials for - a 70 to 75% clinical response rate and a 50% Partial and or complete response rate. This drug is the real deal - maybe not a cure yet but a better treatment than currently exists for a lot of cancers. Angel

All cancers are caused by viruses, particularly retroviruses. Human Endogenous Retrovirus Type E and Type K are likely involved in human prostate cancer as, too, is XMRV (xenotropic mouse retrovirus) and breast-cancer retrovirus.

This has been the case since 1911 and has become increasing the case since 1954. Now, these xenotropic killer retroviruses are everywhere and causing cancer like crazy in humans. Meanwhile the press and fake-science blames rise of cancer on environmental BULLSHIT so to build support for ending capitalism.

YOU ARE A CHUMP.

Re: Kill Prostate Cancer with a VIRUS
It is Reovirus not retrovirus - they are entirely two different animals. The reovirus used in Reolysin is a single stranded RNA virus that is extremely stable and has most likely existed for millions of years in it's current wild type state. Reo stands for respiratory enteric orphan virus. Orphan means that there is no human illness associated with it. It's natural state is in the environment, dirt, muddy water etc. including the lungs and intestinal tract of humans where it causes no known illnes. Up to 70% of all people have contracted the virus at some point in their lives with no ill effects. The cells of the lungs and intestinal tract are very quick growing and for the most part are RAS activated like metastatic cancer cells except they die quickly while cancer cells don't. The reovirus replicates in RAS activated cells. The reovirus can not replicate in healthy cells that are not RAS activated because of a substance called PKR that neutralizes the virus. In the RAS activated lung and intestinal cells the cells die so quickly that the virus can not replicate much because the cell dies and its vestiges including the virus are cleared by the body. When reolysin is injected directly into Ras activated cancer tumors or is taken intravenously (with other chemotheraputic drugs that suppress the immune system) the reovirus gets into both healthy cells and the RAS activated cancer cells. The healthy cells have the substance PKR to neutralize the reovirus. The Ras activated cancer cells, not having PKR, can not kill the virus which hijacks the cell's replication system and replicates uncontrollably until it kills the cell and ruptures it releasing progeny virus particles to kill other cancer cells. This cascading effect can continue till most if not all of the cancer cells are killed. The remaining virus particles are eventually cleared by the immune system. Only minor flu like symptoms occur with this 'unnatural' reovirus infection.

Most people with terminal prostate cancer or any terminal cancer who wanted to live would take any promising drug they could get their hands on and would go out of their way to get it to ease their intractible pain and prolong their lives. Reolysin is such a promising drug that is currently in 9 clinical trials and soon will be in even more trials.
