As the article says, it's hardly a rare occurrence.

After being tailed for four hours, the Russians eventually left British airspace.

The Ministry of Defence stressed that there was no indication that the planes intended to enter British airspace.

you can fly from one end of the UK to the other in 4 hours. It sounds like the Russians were just pissing about if they were flying around the Western Isles and Northern Ireland for 4 hours.

the russians are testing their technology... they have skirted canada's radars in the past and violated alaska's air space more than a few times. pretty sad that they can enter USA airspace thru canada. our borders are not secure.

The Tupolev Tu160 is a heavy bomber which was first deployed during the last years of the Soviet Union.

It has the heaviest take-off weight and the highest top speed of any combat aircraft.

What a coincidence, I just finished watching the movie/documentary, Threads. It follows a UK family through what would happen during a nuclear war with Russian forces. The movie starts a few weeks before the bombs are dropped and ends somewhere around twenty years after the nuclear exchange. It is a very depressing, disturbing, and graphic film for those who are not already desensitized.

YouTube appears to have disappeared from the web in the same week as the site's owner Google stopped censoring its Chinese search service and suffered a bug that changed a corporate information page into several different languages.

Many pages on the site bear the message "Http/1.1 Service Unavailable" and embedded videos on other sites hosted on YouTube cannot be played, instead saying: "An error occured, please try again later."

Other error messages include: "Internal Server Error. The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request."

The outage comes the day after a page on the Google site that contains information about the company's top executive appeared in Chinese and Russian languages instead of displaying information in English, a problem that Google later blamed on a bug.

It also comes in the same week that Google angered the Chinese government by stopping its censored search service in the country.

There is no reference to it on the YouTube Status blog as yet though Google has released an official statement.

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but YouTube is temporarily unavailable. Our engineers are currently working to restore the site," a Google spokesman said.

UPDATE 1230GMT: The site appears to be up and running again, including index pages and profile pages.

A senior Russian air force commander has claimed that new, upgraded Tu-160 bomber aircraft were unchallenged by US air defense systems when they penetrated a radar zone near the Canadian coast in US territory during an April training exercise, reports the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

Commander of Russia's long-range strategic bombers, Lieutenant General Igor Khvorov said that the bombers successfully carried out four mock Tu-95MS cruise missile launches, 200 mock bombings, and 53 mock sorties during the exercise. The RIA Novosti reported that the United States Air Force is currently investigating how the Tu-160's escaped detection.

Lieutenant General Igor Khvorov said, "They were unable to detect the planes either with radars or visually."

Khvorov denies any link of the tests to the current US-Iranian tension, saying, "Of course, our exercises did not have anything to do with the situation in Iran, but their organization indirectly echoed in that region."

The Tupolev Tu-160 is a strategic bomber introduced in 1987. It resembles the North American B-1B Lancer, but is larger and faster, being powered by four NK-32 afterburning turbofans, the largest in any combat aircraft. It is not considered to be a stealth aircraft due to its exposed engine inlets and broad wing gloves.

According to Khvorov over the course of this year, two additional Tu-160s will be commissioned for the long-range strategic bomber fleet with the numerous upgrades, including the ability to launch cruise missiles, aviation bombs, and satellite communication.
