Things I regret as a child
Having the hindsight of middle age, I recently began reflecting on my childhood and the observations therein. This is a list of the things I regret (in no particular order). Somewhat rhetorically - why do adults do this?

1. Being told to "shut up" whenever I asked a difficult question.

2. Being told to "hurry up" for nearly every activity involving adults (unless they were drunk or preoccupied). I notice this as an adult in situations where it would be rude or inappropriate to say this to an adult.

3. Indoctrinated into respecting anyone older than me.

4. Having to go to bed at a set time, even if I wasn't tired.

5. Not being asked my opinion or it is considered irrelevant - until I left school when magically people would ask what I thought.

6. Being led to believe that authority figures should not be challenged.

7. Being led to believe that sex was bad because people didn't talk about it openly instead of being told WHY people didn't talk about it.

8. Not knowing that the times my parents were "very happy" was when they were actually drunk (more of an observation than a regret!).

9. Being nice to people who did not deserve it.

What things do you regret as a child??

Number 5 in your post was a shock to me when I turned 18 and started working, as I remember. I remember when I was considered an adult everyone acted different to me overnight. It was like wtf in my mind.

I don't regret any of it. Not my childhood, or my adulthood.

I've come to see life as a gift. A very tiny moment in the grand scheme of things. I've learned to look back and forgive those who may have hurt me, and ask forgiveness from those I may have hurt. And in doing so, I've realized that every moment, good and bad, that I have reflected on, has been worth it.

Life is a blessing.

Hmmmm.....not so much as regret as understanding.....coming from a poor family, parents worked long hrs and I didn't see or spend much time with them.....hell I started working when I was 12....this made me extremely independent from an early age....down side is my wife and others around me feel I don't need or like them cuz I don't ask for help....up side is I'm never lonely or rely on others.....my early regrets of not seeing my parents becomes understanding now cuz I know they really cared and just wanted to provide a better life for me.....its a trade off , but I'm OK with it.....

Being circumcized

Being indoctirinated w/ Catholic garbage

Being in a school system whose purpose is to indoctrinate and destroy any sense of Self or Self autonomy, as well as being mostly unengaging and unchallenging.

Being chastized by my peers for being intelligent.

Being chastized by adults for trumping the in logic, or pointing out the lack thereof in their assertations. (i.e. "quit being a smart ass", "who asked you", "you've got a smart mouth", etc...)

Eating and drinking utter shite ( Soda, CrackDonalds, etc...)

Fluoride "treatments" and mercury fillings at the dentist.

Having a family that is devoid of creativity who raised me in this vacuum of soul.

I regret to inform you that you used the word "Regret" incorrectly.

Regret (emotion)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
John Greenleaf Whittier's fictional heroine Maud Muller gazes into the distance, regretting her inaction and thinking about what might have been.

Regret is a negative conscious and emotional reaction to personal past acts and behaviors. Regret is often felt when someone feels sadness, shame, embarrassment, depression, annoyance or guilt after committing an action or actions that the person later wishes that he or she had not done. Regret is distinct from guilt, which is a deeply emotional form of regret — one which may be difficult to comprehend in an objective or conceptual way. In this regard, the concept of regret is subordinate to guilt in terms of its emotional intensity. By comparison, shame typically refers to the social (rather than personal) aspect of guilt or (in minor context) regret as imposed by the society or culture (enforcement of ethics, morality), which has substantial bearing in matters of (personal and social) honor.

Regret can describe not only the dislike for an action that has been committed, but also, importantly, regret of inaction. Many people find themselves wishing that they had done something in a past situation
.

All of the things mentioned in the post are nothing you did. They were not your acts. Therefore, you can not regret them.

According to my dictionary (Collins) regret IS an appropriate word to use as it "expresses sorrow" in regard to a situation. It does not state sorrow in regard to ones actions exclusively.

Thanks for the definition you supplied - perhaps it is more correct?

Re: Things I regret as a child
I regret that my father took no joy in his fatherhood.

I regret that he was an alcoholic.

I regret that he beat my mother.

I regret that my mother then beat her children.

I regret that my mother "dropped her basket" when I was 5 and tried to kill me with a knife.

I regret no one in the family removed her children from her care.

I regret that I question even now if my parents ever loved me, and if I ever really loved them.
