Breaking: Horse and carriage wreck injures least 4

A vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed ran into a horse and carriage on Peachtree Street, seriously injuring several people Friday night, police said. The conditions and names of those injured was unavailable late Friday.

"The carriage disintegrated, seriously injuring the occupants," said Curtis Davenport, spokesman for Atlanta police.

The four carriage occupants were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. The horse was captured as it ran from the scene, police said. Witnesses at the scene told the AJC the animal appeared to be unharmed.

Atlanta police are investigating the wreck, which happened near Andrew Young International Boulevard.

The vehicle that struck the carriage may have been racing another vehicle, according to witnesses at the scene.

The incident caused traffic delays in the area. Peachtree Street, from Ellis to Harris streets, was temporarily blocked. The sidewalks in the area were also blocked to pedestrians.

The road was re-opened shortly after 9 p.m.
