-=What is your preferred firearm?? Im shopping=-
I am looking around at different firearms and thought with the variety of people here, I might land an educated suggestion as to what would work best for me.

I don't own any guns at the moment, but did have a Ruger P89 several years ago, along with a Hi-point 9mm carbine. I really like the POF rifles, particularly the .223 but I don't have that kind of money. A in-law suggested an AK-47 for reliability and stopping power. I'm also aware that I need something that has wide ammo availability like a .223, or 7.62/.308.

I am trying to get educated, but there is a lot of information out there, and I'm having trouble finding where to start.

Im 6' about 230 and have large hands so I want something with a substantial grip, I think. I don't know exactly what the deal is with the barrel length.

Forgot to mention that this would also include pistol suggestions. I live in SC so we do have CC permits available, so something that doesn't weigh 15 pounds and can still stop a charging water buffalo would be great. tounge

For real stopping power at closer range go with a shotgun with rifled slugs or 00 buck.

I want a pistol that would be for protection and possibly a slightly smaller on for concealed carry.
I want the rifle/SG to protect my wife and kids if TSHTF.

I like the variety. It seems the more I talk to people the more I realize there isn't an all-in-one. People seem to look at guns, just like I look at my tools. You need the right one for a specific job.

New Ruger Mini-14...

Accuracy problems of the old Mini's have been fixed with a heavier barrel and best of all, the mini goes bang everytime you pull the trigger because the action is based off Garand / M14.

$668 shipped.

.45acp

Good, common round with plenty of stopping power. I use a 1911 with ambi-safety because I'm a lefty. Be careful with all the new fancy plastic 45s. They're wildly popular but the composite frame needs replacing sooner than a heavier all-steel pistol.

The 1911 is a good, thin gun that conceals well. I carry open and CC. If you get a striped down version of the 1911, make sure you can get a little play in the slide - it was designed loose to chew through dirt and mud. Tighter slides jam easier.

Do not get a Baby Desert Eagle in .45acp. They suck amazing shit.

Well since I don't have an old one to saw off, would you have a suggestion for a new/used that you would modify like that.
I'm also interested in the legality of doing that. I understand when TSHTF nobody cares what is legal, etc. I am asking because I would like to at least practice with whatever I end up using and make sure it works and I am proficient without Johny Law showing up at my door or the firing range.

I really like the 1911 .45 from what I have seen and heard. Thanks for pointing out about the slide play, is there a way to know from one gun to the next when shopping on line if it's going to be too tight or not??

Benelli is a great choice but you might want to consider Mossberg because they are much more common if stuff happens it might be easier to get parts if you need them.

Arsenal SA-93 (if you can find one).

It's a Bulgarian AK variant w/ a MILLED receiver, chrome-lined barrel, & many Steyr parts inside ;)

[link to lasvegas.backpage.com]

I paid $300 new in 1994... they're about double (or triple) today, but worth it (no better AK on Earth).

Other than shotguns or high powered rifles it's always good to have a .22 rifle with about 5000 rounds for either some protection or for some food hunting.

For home protection I prefer a Luger.

For hunting I actually prefer the bow and arrow, however I have been known to use firearms. Of course one doesn't use an elephant gun to shoot ducks or a bb gun to shoot bear.

Anything has stopping power if you know how to use it, even one of those tiny french hand bag pistols have enough power to drop a man given the right distance and used properly.
