It was one of ten ancient seeds dating back to Korea’s Goryeo dynasty that were found during the excavation of a ruined castle last year. They had remained dormant for hundreds of years in the South Korean province of South Gyeongsang but three of them successfully sprouted when they were planted. Another seed was confirmed to be 650 years old by scientists from the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources. The lotus – revered as a sacred symbol through much of Asia – has been cultivated as a crop on the continent for thousands of years. American scientists have already germinated a lotus seed estimated to be 1,300 years, old which had been buried in an ancient Buddhist garden. A professor from the University of California saw it sprout after following the instructions in a 1,400- year-old gardening book. The flower has huge cultural significance and figures from Buddhism, Hinduism and other religions are often depicted sitting on a lotus flower. The seeds continue to be of great importance in Asian cuisine and they are used extensively in traditional Chinese medicine. You are the CEO of your own wellness.
