Are Crossbows a good alternative to Handguns?
I live in a state(NY) where it's impossible to get a handgun license. However I could buy a crossbow at lot easier than trying to get a gun for self defense....

Re: Are Crossbows a good alternative to Handguns?
Crossbows have a shorter range, less power and are more cumbersome than handguns.

They do not have anywhere near the stopping power and can become unloaded if you are not orienting them correctly or have a special keeper on them.

Most importantly on the negative side, they are slow.

BUT...

They are quiet. They look enough like a gun to cause people to respond with terror as if to a gun when one is pointed at them. This is a psychological thing, you KNOW it's not a handgun, you may even know the stats as to what they can do...But it's still hard to put yourself into a position where you could simply take it away from a person, even though it would be technically easier than with a gun.

They also have fewer legal issues involved in some areas.

I would personally prefer having one if I was under attack at home to NOT having anything with which to protect myself.

It's better than going into a gunfight empty handed for instance.

Plus you can learn to make your own.

This will sound a little strange, but have you considered a slingshot? Firing screws or bolts (as in hardware bolts) they can be lethal, they are silent weapons and can be much faster than a crossbow.

They are not a "super weapon" true, but they give you range and speed of attack without a large amount of bulk.

I am speaking of the "wrist rocket" type of slingshot, not the old shepherds sling. Those are too hard to use quickly and don't give you the accuracy you need.

Stay away from fancy martial arts weapons in general and get a stick, about four foot long, and learn to use it. (I recommend A Japanese Jo style or something simpler like French La canne.) It won't take long to become proficient and worst case scenario, you can open up on a person as if with a baseball bat.

Bo lengths are too long, Sai are meant to fight against swords and while impressive looking don't have much utility in the modern age for home defense, Nunchuks are a silly weapon and always were. I have seen to many experts manage to hit themselves with their own weapons in a real fight with these.

an empty shell 30/30-150's for 'total nuclear annihilation'. It uses a 9.7 grain in terms of bullet. That was done a long long time ago in a variety of ways:

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 849621

With 30 cal lead filled steel balls and a lot of practice you can kill a man with these. At 15 feet a 30 Cal ball flying at 325 fps from a Canadian Tire wrist rocket, will penetrate the skull. If that does not kill immediately, it will render him incapable of fighting back while you cut hit throat with your backup commando dagger.
