A type 1 diabetes cure is a step closer following positive results in a patient injected with insulin-producing cells from a pig.
New Zealand researchers at Living Cell Technologies injected the cells from an Auckland Island piglet pancreas into the abdomen of a 48-year-old man on October 6, 2009.
Within two months the patient, who has had type 1 diabetes for 20 years, had reduced his daily insulin injections by 30 percent. He was the first of eight people due to receive an abdominal transplant of pig cells, which are specially coated in a seaweed-based gel and release insulin and other essential hormones.
The clinical trial conducted at Middlemore Hospital, in Auckland, New Zealand, follows trials at lower-dosage rates of the Diabecell implants in Russia, where a woman came off insulin completely.
Auckland Island Pigs in Diabetes Research
The pigs used in the trial are from a unique breed of feral pig that has survived for almost two centuries on the remote and cold Auckland Islands that lie in the southern seas between the very south of New Zealand and Antarctica.
The pigs were essentially food supply for sailors stranded by shipwreck in the area. But, as shipping improved, the pigs were no longer needed and were left to their own devices, threatening the native flora and fauna of the island.
