i just read something this morn. i didn't know...there is erupting and there is explosive erupting. this one hasn't got to the explosive stage yet.

Does anyone know the elevation of the magma chambers from Eyja to Katla? It would be interesting to know if the lava has entered the chambers and at what level they are.

I'm thinking the FLIR is effected by distance to heat source too. So when the ground is the only thing visible in fog.. the FLIR will register it as the hottest part of the image and give it a white hot designation. When the eruption is visible, the ground is still hot, obviously due to daytime lighting, but also relative distance to the camera as opposed to the eruption plume.

I have seen images during an eruption. The erupting gases register white, then according to your theory the ground would not be white.

And the relative distance is less then 1/4.

Don't worry, the valley floor that is showing the hottest temperature in the area (still actually cold, not hot) is a long way from the volcano. So nothing huge is going to happen.

I was watching that cam last night and the whole area that is white/yellow today...was red...holy shit...is all I can say...I was concerned when it was red, and the little icon was right at the sight of the actual eruption up on top and was showing white/yellow with fringes of red...now it's on the bottom and it's all yellow/white....I would say that's NOT a good thing...(...is the dark maroon/purple cold? as in snow beneath the ash?)

Precisly, a temp deviation of a mere 40-50 degrees F could white out the screen depending on the setting they are using. Not really a big deal unless you know the actual temperature gradient in use.

That looks really scary. The white colour is just as hot as the mouth of the volcano. The first thought that struck me when I saw it, was the scene from the movie "2012" when they were flying over Hawaii in the Antonov plane, and saw the whole island melting away in streams of lava.

It's certainly doing something now.

Is that white steam coming out of the side of the volcano now or a cloud? And dark steam at the top.

And you, Sir/Madame are quite rude and ignorant your own self...I probably did jump to some incorrect conclusions, based on what I had seen last night and how different it looked this morning....but I thought I made it clear that I didn't quite understand what was going on (hence the question about cool temps being maroon colored)..and you are also correct, I was not thinking about daytime vs nighttime, cool temps vs possible warm temps making a difference to the camera..seems to me there's a whole lot more people on this thread who didn't quite understand how the infrared camera worked, but how do we learn??? by discussing and asking questions as a rule..so take your ignorance and stuff it...not all of us are geologists...or infrared experts...
