ok so you have Obama and company blasting republicans for voting down his 10billion dollar proposed liability cap increase.
Now as I see it you have a couple of things going on here.
1 Obama took 77k during his campaign from BP. [link to www.politico.com]
2 BP made 5.5 Billion in the first quarter. [link to www.bp.com]

SOOOO
You have a president who took money from the largest American oil producer in the world, trying to raise the liability cap to 10 Billion; that would be inconvenient at worst to BP but completely bankrupt any smaller oil producer, who would be BP's competition.
You have republicans; which I am NOT one of; looking like the bad guys for shooting it down, not because they want BP to get away with it, although it will be spun that way.
You have a PERFECT opportunity for some political spin to get Oil(power) production nationalized in order to "regulate" it better so this doesn't happen again.
