City To Crack Open 100-Year-Old Time Capsule

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Crews freed a 100-year-old time capsule from the Des Moines City Hall building on Saturday and plan to open it on Friday.

The capsule was sealed in the cornerstone of the Municipal Building at 400 East First Street. It was placed inside the cornerstone on June 14, 1910.

Friday at 8:30 a.m. in the City Council Chamber, it will be opened. State Historical Society Archivist Jeffry Dawson will oversee the opening and removal of the contents.

The public is invited to a ceremony and a public viewing of the contents on June 14. The opening of the time capsule on Friday is not open to the public.
