About 4 weeks ago, it was pretty clear that this volcanic high pressure gusher of oil, natural gas, and methane was going to be an ecological and economical catastrophe.

It's so sad to watch this unfold. Sorry for your pain Tessa.

This is what I don't understand: there are long established contingency measures for oil spill cleanup; why aren't they being followed to protect the beaches...ALL the beaches? At minimum and in response to a LACK of action on BP or other, this should be conducted at the local level.

A basic explanation: You trench the beaches. Deep trenches with sump pumps. When the oil and tar starts washing in, the water in the trench is siphoned off and the oil collects in the trenches. The contained oil is then bulldozed off and removed.

My question is: why is this not being executed on ALL beaches??? There is no excuse.

Yeah..there's nothing wrong with using resources. it's the cutting corners of things (ie. safety devices, and scrimping on details) that led to this disaster...i've worked with some dangerous stuff but you have to have back up plans and you have to have safety guidelines that ARE practiced.
you can't cut corners.

now if this was a false flag that's a different story. and a different discussion.

what are we going to say when we travel to the stars, its too dangerous?

i admit we need alternatives in place. but it's greed and cutting corners that caused this.

 Quoting: Hillcrest

I am not asserting that BP is not at fault for not following safe procedure, but to think that BP is the only company operating in this manner is simply an uneducated position.

They do it in the US BECAUSE THEY CAN. By law, ALL of them can.......and do. It is systemic. Not so in other countries.

And to blind yourself to your/my complicity is just, well, blind. Believe me, if there was no demand for this level of product, there would be no searching for supply. And if the US (corporate controlled Congress) were not so lax in drilling, safety and contingency response regulations in the US in going after the supply, then we would experience less of this destruction. One only need look at the laws and the safety record of the same oil companies operating in other countries.

My point: understand this is SYSTEMIC...it is NOT just BP. It is driven by demand and followed by a lack of appropriate regulations to ensure safety in this country. It could have as easily been Shell, TOTAL, etc.

On the other hand, be very, very careful in falling for support of Cap and Trade as this law has absolutely nothing to do with this issue.

Tessa, that sand sparkles. You are blessed to have enjoyed it. I've never been to Florida and I intended to go visit the Keys this summer.

Now I won't be going. Who knows what the beaches will look like in a matter of weeks?
