Don't forget the intense wave action of the Atlantic that will quickly degrade the oil pushing the particles down to the sea floor. Not good for the sea floor or anything in between on its way but that is what will occur.

Re: TAR BALLS WASHING ONTO NAVARRE BEACH, FL
I lived in Texas for 8 years..... I spent a couple of vacations in Port Aransas around the time of the 79 leak. The beach was still beautiful, but you had to spend a 20 minutes cleaning the tar from your feet after a walk on the beach.

I grew up in Orlando with the summers filled with time at Cocoa, New Smyrna, Daytona and Melbourne Beaches. In the last 7 years I have grown to dearly love the keys. I am deeply depressed at the thought of what is to come. It affects me in a way that I have not felt before......

Basically the knowledge that life is about to change in so many ways that we never imagined would actually come true. What ever happens I will die in Florida because it is a very special place to me as is everyones native home. 45 of my 56 years have been spent here and I cry inside a little bit everyday now because of the calamity that we have all helped to occur.

I want desparately to believe we can avert the worst case senario, but it sweems to be fading into the sunset...... How many do we have left?

The positive in this equation is there are bacteria and other micro-organisms at those depths that naturally consume hydrocarbons. It's those critters that help keep naturally occurring oil seepage, which is about 60% of total if memory serves, from becoming a real issue.

horrible visual.

thanks for posting that video however!

NOTE: If those "tar balls" are washing up, NOBODY (in their right mind) should consider swimming in that water!!!!!

Not only is it polluted by oil/tar balls but it ALSO has traces of those chemical dispersants in it too and that is NOT SAFE to have on or in your skin...probably worse than bleach.

I'm sure that somebody weeks from now will be coming down with a crazy case of skin cancer from "winging it" out there in those waters, just because they had to get in one last swim.

It's not that serious folks.

I've cancelled my vacation to South Beach b/c of this...beautiful waters indeed but I don't want to risk it. Hanging out at the beach was the best. TPTB have robbed us of that luxury now among many other small things.

I don't want beach cancer from the water. It's bad enough you have to think about it from the sun.

That's a good news/bad news situation.

Most of the oxygen we breath is produced by the plankton in the ocean. The oil is killing the plankton.

The oil eating organisms consume oxygen as they munch away at the oil, so therefore the net result will be even less oxygen in the atmosphere.

225 Days for Oil from the Gulf of Mexico to Reach San Francisco
[link to www.rense.com]

Once the oil enters the Gulf Stream it will be carried up the coast, but it will not touch New York because of the Labrador Current which flows south hugging the coast will provide a barrier. The oil will be carried northeast becoming part of the North Atlantic Drift where it will eastward through the Barents Sea, which it will reach in approximately 100 days, westward until it exists the Arctic Ocean through the Bering Straits in about 150 days as part of the Oyashio Current where west winds with join it to the Kuro Siwo current in perhaps 175 days where it will reach the Pacific Northwest after 200 days and become part of the California Current traveling down the California coast, reaching San Francisco after 225 days. Here the oil will cause havoc as the it pollutes fisheries, mixing with the cold upwelling waters that have made these regions so rich in sea protein for mankind.

Tar balls have always washed up on Padre Island.

They believe they come from something natural in the gulf, most of the tar is old like it has traveled far before reaching the beaches. It gets caught up in some kind of gulf current and washes ashore.

As I understand it, the organisms at the depths of the Atlantic do not consume O2. There isn't much of it down there. I believe they are anaerobic and thrive mostly on sulphate instead...or nitrogen?...don't remember.

Yes, while the oil is on or close to the surface - again, as I understand it, most photosynthesis occurs between surface and about 150 feet down - we could have a massive plankton problem.

Short of collecting/sucking the oil out of the water, that's one of the reasons that using *safe* dispersant - yes, that which is proven safe and not Corexit - and hoping for storm/intense wave activity to break up/degrade the oil so it will sink have proven to be the most effective in situations past.

Interesting video, pretty much what you're saying:

(I hope this embeds, first time I've tried this)

<param name="movie" value=" [link to www.youtube.com] name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><embed src=" [link to www.youtube.com] type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="385">

At this point, nothing could be worse than what they're doing- which is dousing the gulf with Corexit.
