Nearly One Million US Workers Cut Off Unemployment Benefits | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 972101 Canada 06/20/2010 05:46 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Unemployment "insurance" is paid by the EMPLOYER, not the employee ( unless perhaps the person is in a union, and pays into a "strike" fund ). Quoting: MountainTuxEmployees only pay for 1/2 of Social Security and Medicare, the employer pays the other half. My point, which went right over your imbecile-IQ head, is that too many people are whining they need gov't. help, but primarily they FAILED to plan ahead. I stand by my statement that the guy I responded to, is taking NO personal responsibility for his own sorry situation. I grew up VERY poor, and the MOMENT I got a job, I started SAVING my money, because I did not want to be poor again. I never owned a car until I was 25, and it was used. Unemployment "insurance," in MY province, is paid by both the employer AND the employee. If this is NOT the case where you are (which would surprise me, but I'm not all-knowing) then you're luckier than many. MY point, which stands, is that people who are in need of the unemployment benefits which working for x amount of time grants them are being denied by Congress... the SAME Congress who GAVE AWAY $700B of the American taxpayer's money. The SAME Congress which continues to fund Obama's war machine, despite each of his promises that THIS is the last time he'll dip into the kitty. I believe that you grew up very poor, and I'm sure that this affords you with a very specific viewpoint. It also affords you a VERY unique arrogance, which isn't uncommon in that situation. Be that as it may, YOU have missed the point of the entire thread, and chosen to make a broad statement based on one individual who seems to have rubbed you the wrong way. So be it. And I find it interesting that you should decide to try to insult MY IQ... insults in the face of differing opinion GENERALLY point to an inferior intellect. And while I have no need to defend myself, I can assure you that my IQ, for however little it's worth, would most certainly shock you. But then, I don't expect, or care, for you to believe that. If you wish to discuss differing opinions, fine. If you want to attack people based on YOUR situation instead of THEIRS, then I'd have to say that you are STILL very poor, and that you never DID grow up. Cheers! Same here, my employer can stop taking "his" contributions off MY checque. |

User ID: 699175 United States 06/20/2010 05:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Technically, the employer does pay those things. But it all comes from the same pot, the cost of doing business. So, theoretiacally, if he didn't pay those things, he MIGHT pay higher wages or imporve working conditions. In effect, everything is paid by those who earn the profit for the business. You boss is not paying out of his pocket. Nor does the employer "pay" taxes. The taxes are figured in to the price of the product. Nor the social security, medicade or any other government subsidy is "paid for" by the employer. Your employer pays you a wage "minus" the taxes. "I'm still here, you bastards!"...Papillion |

Good thread! Quoting: Pea VineThank you, I really appreciate that. And truth be told, I'm pleasantly surprised at how little conflict there has been. Honestly, that's why I rarely post a thread. As far as I'm concerned, if I START a thread, I should be there to defend my position, and I just have so little patience with the "STFU" crowd these days. However, this is something I feel VERY strongly about, for BOTH of our countries. I'm lucky enough to be in the "have" category also. For a bit of perspective, I'm actually working as we speak... I get up and commute thirty feet. LOL I have a fair wage, good benefits, company provided equipment. So yes, it's not bad. At the SAME time, I worked long and hard to get where I am. I LITERALLY broke my back working dog-labour jobs while getting the letters behind my name so that I could COMPETE for a job which allowed me to work my way to where I am. Even so, I'm fully aware of how much sheer dumb luck played into my situation, and that's something I cannot forget. But for any number of chance happenings, someone else would be here and I'd still be slinging 180LB brake drums for just over minimum wage. So I guess that makes me MORE keenly aware of how utterly degrading it is for honest, hardworking people, who AREN'T getting a chance, to take yet ANOTHER kick in the face, which could literally send them to the streets. Because make no mistake, there is NO other way to describe bailing out a rich bank, rather than the hardworking citizens that gave you your government job and cushy pension, while we may not SEE a pension. To put it in perspective, if a dog was treated the same way, the SPCA would call the police, and criminal charges would probably follow. But do the same to people? <<SIGH>> Yes, I feel strongly about this. The power of Linux COMPELS you! |

What caused them to seccede from British rule? A desire to be out from under a feudal, royalist system. Had they just kept lowering the living standard gradually? I would fully agree. But for whatever reason, they have accelerated the situation FAR beyond what they should, which will cause desperation rather than lethargy... and desperate people WILL do desperate things, even the lazy or cowardly.
