PeterGriffin User ID: 1007274 United States 06/20/2010 08:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have lost my benifits and I have not drawn for 99 weeks even. I lost my job to China. Because of this I am considered a displaced worker. I have been enrolled in school since the day after I was laid off. I am supposed to be in a program called TAA , which pay extended benifits to displaced workers who are currently being trained for another job. I was just accepted into a Registered Nursing program last week after a year of extremely hard work. Now, I face the possibility of losing even that opportunity if I cant even affort gas to drive to school. By the way, I do not recieve any type of government benifits such as food stamps or medical care for me or my children. UE is really my only income.... now what am I supposed to do? With the situation in the gulf, even resturants near here are starting to have problems. So , there are no jobs there either and I have applied for every type of job within 50 miles of here. I am willing to work nites and go to school days, but no dice..... |

A lot of people here have lost benefits and are turning to crime really. Well so am I. And Obama's plan about forcing people to buy health insurance isn't "commienism" it's forcing to pay to a CORPORATION. Even tho it's being fought in the courts under a TAX LAW. It's using governmental power to enrich a freaking CORPORATION/s. He's a damn corporatist just like the rest of them. And I do agree you should have the choice, insurance or no. Anonymous Coward User ID: 592469 United States 06/20/2010 08:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Your entire paragraph shows that YOU take no responsibility for the situation you are now in. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 742489I don't understand your position. Spoken like someone who has never truly BEEN "in need." The government IS RESPONSIBLE to pay those benefits which they deduct from the pay of any citizen, your country or mine. Don't blur the line between UNEMPLOYMENT benefits and welfare payments, because they are two VERY different things. Taking your stance, I should have the right to tell the government that I WILL not pay into unemployment OR pension, and handle my OWN finances in case of emergency. As I cannot exercise that right, the government is now in contract with me to provide payment of benefits which have been deducted from MY income, drawn by MY labour. Furthermore, the government is a body elected to, in it's simplest form, shepherd the welfare of it's electorate. That means that MY tax dollars, providing THEIR salaries, give me the right to both expect and demand fair treatment and assistance. By YOUR position, my insurance company can take my money for twenty years, then simply decide to only cover a small portion of the damages incurred in an accident, or none at all, BUT still demand the deductible fee from me. This makes sense to you? Unemployment "insurance" is paid by the EMPLOYER, not the employee ( unless perhaps the person is in a union, and pays into a "strike" fund ). Employees only pay for 1/2 of Social Security and Medicare, the employer pays the other half. My point, which went right over your imbecile-IQ head, is that too many people are whining they need gov't. help, but primarily they FAILED to plan ahead. I stand by my statement that the guy I responded to, is taking NO personal responsibility for his own sorry situation. I grew up VERY poor, and the MOMENT I got a job, I started SAVING my money, because I did not want to be poor again. I never owned a car until I was 25, and it was used. Sure, some fail to plan ahead, but what about all of those other people, millions! that lost money in the stock market crash of 2008????? Things happen to rapidly and fast now that before you can even blink, you could lose a lot of money in the stock market or retirement savings just like that! It is hard to say now, planning ahead. More like day each day as it comes. |

User ID: 985865 United States 06/20/2010 09:00 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think that these three excerpts really say it all... Quoting: MountainTux"In the two and a half weeks since June 1, when the last extension expired, some 903,000 workers have seen their benefits cut off. By June 26, that number will top 1.2 million. Meanwhile, the Labor Department reported that the number of new claims for unemployment compensation jumped to 472,000 last week, the highest figure in several months. The result is that a Congress that rushed through a $700 billion bailout of Wall Street in October 2008 in a matter of days, and authorized a further financial windfall to the banks and speculators five months later, cannot bring itself to support even the most meager subsistence for the unemployed workers who are the victims, not the perpetrators, of the economic crisis." _____ "According to press reports, leading Senate Democrats are seeking to win votes from the bill’s opponents by eliminating a $25 a week increase in jobless benefits that was part of the 2009 stimulus package. In other words, either all 10 million jobless workers would see a $25 cut in benefits, from checks averaging $309 a week, or benefits for the 5.7 million long-term unemployed would be cut off completely. Either way, those deprived of work by the economic crisis of capitalism, the most vulnerable section of the working class, will be made to pay." _____ "While the White House and Congress wrangle over the smallest of subsistence measures for the jobless, neither party nor the corporate elite as a whole propose to do anything to provide jobs for the unemployed. The Wall Street Journal reported last week that American corporations have increased their cash reserves to $1.84 trillion, the highest figure in history. In other words, big business and the banks, after an unprecedented bailout by the public treasury, are hoarding the funds that could put millions back to work. The cash reserves of major corporations have jumped 26 percent in one year, the largest percentage increase in nearly 60 years. The cash reserves of working people, and particularly the unemployed, have not been so fortunate." _____ This isn't even MY government, and yet I'm shocked and saddened. I feel sorry for these people, thrown to the dogs by the same government that calls CORPORATIONS "Too big to fail." Shouldn't the lives and livelihoods of the people they were elected by, and swore to do right by, ALSO be considered too big to fail? <<SIGH>> Full article: [link to globalresearch.ca] "In 2008 I promised you change here you have it" |

The government shouldn't be subsidizing megacorporations or us either. The sugartit is very tasty and nobody gets weaned. USA isn't producing much of value except extreme concentrations in a handful of companies (apple, google, etc). We need to be focusing on creating value in some way the world can't imitate easily, and we would have, too, if the USA weren't a communist nation. Since we are all clamoring for the sugartit of course I'm going to throw my lot in with the people and say, screw your bailouts, give more to the people, in principle. But 1) how sad 2) somebody invent something for gods sake! And 3) such handouts may come with strings (RFID chips?) attached. Just saying, careful what you wish for. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1004830It's NOT a COMMUNIST nation. God. If you want to see a reasonable fascimile or something even close, look to the state capitalism of Russia. Gazprom, Yukos, Lukoil etc. Which were taken over by the siloviki after a few robber baron oligarchs had bankrupted the country in 1998. When a few crucial element of the Russian Federation economy BECAME the STATE. The US gov't is just giving the robber barons people's money and it's status quo. You are not reaping Goldman Sach's Wallstreet windfall at all. Just look at the last quarter, more great profit reported and people are still unemployed. Rhian User ID: 875736 United States 06/20/2010 09:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | During the former depression, a distant Uncle of mine took a camera he had left over from the good days, and walked the streets taking people pics for 10 cent's each. He had four sons, and they helped him, while his wife grew food, kept chickens and managed to keep the them fed. He collected the dimes in a stout bag, and at the end of every week, he and his sons went into the woods for privacy and he carefully counted his money, taking only what would keep them alive and cached the rest in a secret place. No one trusted the banks, or anyone else. There were grifters about, thieves and desperate men, wandering around looking for anything they could get. Eventually my Uncle had enough saved up to lease a small location, where people could come to get photos in a studio. Cameras were updated and added to, and the sons continued to walk the streets, like their Dad had, only this time there was more income, because there were more cameras, and the studio caught on also. Eventually, my uncle was a millionaire with a string of studios, called Jay Lynn. Three generations of this family have been kept wealthy, educated and well fed from this business. Because they became their own bank in the woods, with that bag of dimes, collected from hours and hours of street marketing, saving, and investing back into his own enterprise. Be your own bank. Invest in personally held commodities. Think about unemployment, as your big chance to start something important. Have the self discipline to save for a better future. Never pay interest. Never trust a commercial bank. |
