On Monday, the US tied its current record of 11 consecutive days with at least eight tornadoes confirmed on each of those days, said Patrick Marsh, warning co-ordination meteorologist for the federal Storm Prediction Center.

The previous 11-day stretch of at least eight tornadoes per day ended on June 7, 1980.

“We’re getting big counts on a lot of these days and that is certainly unusual,” Marsh said.

David Payne was live when condensation was sucked up off the ground and out of the trees and said he hasn’t seen anything like that or that unusual.

He has been saying that about many things this whole storm season. These storms and the tornados have acted out of character.

Environmental groups are suing federal regulators for failing to establish rules limiting the use of chemical dispersants during oil spills, the latest move in an ongoing debate over controversial chemicals that were heavily used during the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

The University of California-Berkeley Environmental Law Clinic announced Monday (Mar. 25) that it had filed a notice of intent to sue the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on behalf of several groups and individuals who say people and the environment in Alaska and Louisiana were harmed by dispersants during the Exxon Valdez and Deepwater Horizon disasters.


Plaintiffs include Plaquemines Parish commercial fisher Kindra Arnesen, the Earth Island Institute, the Alaska Community Action on Toxics and Alaska’s Cook Inletkeeper.

Rather than clean up oil, a dispersant breaks it into droplets that more easily mix with water. Dispersants have been used during 27 spills in the U.S. over the past 40 years, and most of those were in the Gulf, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The intended purpose of dispersants like Corexit 9500 is to break up oil slicks on the water’s surface by increasing the rate at which oil droplets form and move into the water column.

Chemical dispersion does not reduce the amount of oil entering the marine environment; rather, it aims to change where the oil goes and how quickly it gets there.

The idea is to turn the oil into small droplets which are more easily degraded by naturally occurring microbes, but it turns out that this plan may backfire.

In research conducted following the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, Corexit was found not only to be toxic to naturally occurring microbes that can degrade oil, but to actually suppress their oil-degrading ability.

Kindra Arnesen’s fishing boats are still parked near Venice, La., but she left years ago. Her family was driven out by the toxic odor from a chemical dispersant sprayed in the Gulf of Mexico to break up oil from the massive 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon spill.

Before they fled, her husband experienced respiratory problems. Her daughter broke out in rashes. Arnesen, 41, had headaches and other skin problems. “We live in the middle of an oil field,” she said, referring to the thousands of oil platforms in the gulf. Oil continues to seep a few miles off Venice from a Taylor Energy operation destroyed during a hurricane nearly 15 years ago. “People don’t realize how many spills we have here.”

Fearing the next spill, Arnesen joined a lawsuit against the Environmental Protection Agency, claiming that the agency has allowed 25 years to go by without updating the National Contingency Plan to respond to oil spills. On Monday, the University of California at Berkeley Environmental Law Center issued the agency a 60-day intent to sue notice on behalf of several groups and individuals “for failure to perform a non-discretionary duty” under the Clean Water Act.

The petition brought by the group of protesters – which included Gulf Coast residents, small businessmen and women, environmental activists and workers who helped clean up the disastrous 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill – had 100,000 signatures, said Jonathan Henderson, an environmental organizer and lobbyist based in New Orleans.

The petition, as well as an ensuing press conference on site, was designed to bring attention to several issues still lingering from the BP spill and resulting cleanup eight years ago.BP-oil-spill-victims-112618

The issues addressed included the failure of the federal government and the petroleum industry to implement more than 35 recommendations put forth by the bipartisan National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling created in the wake of the disaster by the Obama administration; the co-sponsorship of the annual Clean Gulf gathering by industry giant BP and by NALCO, the company that produces the controversial oil dispersing chemical Corexit;

the tens of thousands of people who filed health complaints in the wake of the spill and cleanup effort who have yet to receive a fair day in court; and the cost-prohibitive conference registration fee of $900, which Henderson said prevented many Gulf Coast fishermen and coastal residents from attending the gathering, which was held Nov. 13-15.

Without the voices of the average people who have been most severely negatively impacted by the 2010 spill and cleanup, Henderson said, what could have been a productive, inclusive conference was turned into an event that effectively silenced those voices.

I Read some of the posts reporting this as non-starter in that it happens regularly when there have been heavy rains and all the Mississippi River dumps into the gulf.

Yes, has been covered here many times over the years... but -

Always good to watch it and see what readings they get in terms of toxicity, as just because it's an annual event, also means it's off most people's radar and can be used as a cover for something.

Sounds conspiratorial I know.. but this is GLP so...
