Teen Catches Sleazy Army
Recruiter Tactics On Video
By John Aguilar
Rocky Mountain News

The fallout from an Arvada teenager´s investigative piece for his school newspaper is one reason Army recruiters nationwide will "STAND DOWN" today for a REFRESHER class in ETHICS.

David McSwane never thought his story would get so big when he gave his 15-year-old friend a camcorder, his 11-year-old sister a still camera, and enlisted his mother to keep him out of legal hot water.

When McSwane was finished, Army recruiters in Golden had been caught encouraging him to manufacture a FAKE high school DIPLOMA and accompanying him to a head shop to buy him a drug DETOX kit.

U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard, R-Colo., called on the Army secretary to launch an investigation. The Army subsequently suspended McSwane´s recruiters and began a probe, which is still ongoing.

Douglas Smith, a spokesman for the Army recruiting command in Fort Knox, Ky., said that although the one-day recruitment freeze at 1,700 offices is partly routine, it is largely the result of recent allegations of impropriety.

"We´re going to reassess how Army values play into our jobs. We´re going to address the kind of improprieties that we´ve seen. There´s no avoiding the issue," he said.

Among the Army´s concerns are those uncovered by the 17-year-old Arvada West High School honors student with a full class schedule and after-school job.

McSwane´s story nearly died before it ever got off the ground.

"I told him not to do it," said his mother, Shelly Hansen. "I thought he might get arrested."

Her son, who had read about military enlistment challenges and had seen recruiters working the grounds of Arvada West, wanted to know "just how far will Army recruiters go to get one more."

McSwane had been inspired by the 1961 book Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin, who darkened his skin and documented what it was like to live as a black man in the segregated South.

But McSwane had another motivation when he began his investigation in January.

"I wanted to do something cool, go undercover and do something unusual," he said this week.

The premise was simple: McSwane would try to join the Army as a high school dropout with an insatiable fondness for marijuana and psychedelic mushrooms. No matter how stoned and stupid McSwane acted, a pair of recruiters wouldn´t wouldn´t let him go.

McSwane insisted to the recruiters that he couldn´t lick his drug habit, but one recruiter told him to take some "stuff" that would "clean you out." It turned out to be a detoxification kit the recruiter said had worked with other applicants. McSwane said the recruiter even offered to pay half the cost of the kit.

McSwane´s claim of being a dropout didn´t discourage his recruiters either. He was encouraged to take a high school equivalency diploma exam, which McSwane deliberately failed. That´s when he said one recruiter introduced him to the "home-school option."

McSwane was told to order a phony diploma and transcripts from an online diploma mill.

"It can be like Faith Hill Baptist School or something - whatever you choose," one of the recruiters can be heard saying in a taped phone call.

Several days and $200 later, McSwane became a proud graduate of Faith Hill Baptist High School in Longmont.

"I ordered my four years of high school sweat with a few clicks," he later wrote.

But McSwane knew that if his story was going to hold up, he would need proof. So he enlisted his sister, Victoria, to pretend that she was keeping a photo album of her big brother´s military accomplishments. She took pictures of McSwane shaking hands with his recruiters.

McSwane convinced a high school friend to operate a video camera across the street from a head shop while one of the recruiters drove him to the store to buy a drug detox kit. He even got his mother to covertly slip him some cash during the episode after the head shop refused to accept her credit card.

Since McSwane didn´t wear a wire on most of his visits to the recruiting office, he parlayed his natural forgetfulness as a supposed druggie into an opportunity to tape his recruiters´ during phone calls.

"I´m a drug addict, so I acted confused and asked him to explain things over again," he said.

McSwane stopped reporting the story in March when one of the recruiters asked him to strip down for a weigh-in and sign several legally binding documents.

McSwane´s article ran in the March 17 issue of The Westwind.

McSwane´s next move was to make certain his story didn´t languish on an inside page of his school paper. He shopped it out to local and national media outlets. Only CBS 4 News called back.

The station broadcast its report, "How Far Will the Army Go?," on April 28 and played parts of McSwane´s audio and videotapes.

The high school senior was soon up to his ears in media requests.

Ultimately, McSwane wants more than just media attention. He thinks recruiters, including the two he exposed, are overwhelmed by pressure to make monthly quotas.

"I feel bad they´re taking the fall. It´s their bosses who are telling them to do this. The job is impossible when you have a war going on," he said. .....

One moment please!

If all of these "red Staters" and religious folk voted for Bush, and by simple extension his false war over WMD’s in Iraq….

What’s the problem?

They should put out a call to these people and ask them to serve! THEY VOLENTEERED WITH THEIR VOTES!

It is a simple call to action for his supporters…

In fact, they should not have to be asked!

This story is absolutely hilarious. This kid SHOULD have a great future in investigative journalism, but he probably won´t, because the media moguls would consider him a loose cannon.

The problem is that the Children didnt VOTE for anyone.

The primary goal of a recruiter is to MEET his QUOTA of new recruits, NOT to have young people fully examine their options and make the best choice for their future. Recruiters are salespeople, not guidance counselors, and should be treated as such.

Re: Teen Catches Army Recruiter Tactics On Video
PRETTY COOL ARTICLE---PART OF HERE

Ron Kovic exposed the horrible conditions of the VA hospitals during the Vietnam era in his book, Born on the Fourth of July. As a wounded Vietnam veteran, Kovic was outraged at the outdated equipment, under-qualified and uncaring staffs and the unsanitary conditions that disabled veterans were forced to endure. Therefore, not much has changed since 1970s, and any hope of future change is diminished by dubya´s slashing of the VA´s healthcare budget by 275 million dollars in 2002, and further cuts all around to the VA.

OF COURSE, recruiters never mention this in their DECEIT-filled speeches about the benefits of the military, which is why more veterans need to speak to high school students and parents about the realities of military life.

Although the lies are bad enough, interactions with recruiters can be hazardous to one´s health. One poolee (person waiting to go to boot camp who has already enlisted) wrote me that my first essay had helped him to decide to leave the Marines. The recruiter lied to the poolee by saying that it was too late, that he had already enlisted and therefore he was obligated for the next four years.

During my recruiting days, I learned that any poolee can get OUT before boot camp, and after several more e-mails, the poolee told me that he had finally received his discharge after pushing the matter a little more. His recruiter responded to him with a physical threat by saying, "If I was in front of you right now I´d KNOCK YOU OUT." Great example of the quality of leadership instilled by military service.

My recruiter in 1994 was a Marine sniper who had served in El Salvador and Somalia among other places. He actually admitted to me with excitement that he had killed non-combatants in Somalia with a .50 caliber sniper rifle, a weapon only to be used on vehicles, and that he had taken pictures of his victims afterward. His story was semi-confirmed for me seven years later, once I read Scott Peterson´s Me against my Brother. Peterson wrote, "the snipers killed more than 14 Somalis, some of them children who were found later to have a toy pistol, or nothing." UN spokesperson George Bennet later told Peterson, "They were shooting at anything by the time they left," and this statement only further confirms my recruiter´s story.

Unfortunately, I too am guilty of following an unlawful order from that same recruiter, but of a much lesser magnitude. While assisting him for two weeks just after I graduated from boot camp, part of my job was to make poolees lose weight before they shipped out. One poolee was still twelve pounds overweight the day before boot camp, so naturally my recruiter ordered me to force the poolee to eat an ENTIRE BOX of Ex-lax, after which I had to make him do calisthenics until he lost the twelve pounds. Needless to say, he was admitted to boot camp the next day, but I am still ashamed that I made him do that. The business of recruiting is dark indeed.

Recruiters now have even more access to the young minds of America, with the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2002. These Acts require every high school receiving federal education funds to hand over the names, addresses, and phone numbers of every junior and senior to local recruiters upon request.

That means that even 15 years olds, with no idea whatsoever about the real world, let alone the military, are now vulnerable to the manipulation and deception of recruiters in their own homes. If a school refuses to hand the information over, the Department of Defense steps in and pressures the school, after which federal funding may be withdrawn. According to Secretary of Education Rod Paige and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, the Acts give students more access to college, but we need to ask why it is that the government does not offer any alternative to the military for unskilled high school graduates that wish to go to college but are unqualified for college.

Our COMMANDER in chief himself took the opportunity to join the military, then took a Bush prerogative and failed to return to his duty station for a year and a half. Of course, he did not have to serve the PRISON sentences that others who left for that long did.

Nevertheless, it makes perfect sense. After all, the president is not any different from half of Americans, who support our impending war on Iraq. While over fifty( 50 _percent support an invasion, approximately ONE 1 percent serves in the military. Therefore, only 1 percent of us is willing to fight a battle that over 50 percent of us favor, which makes it much more palatable to start a war.

As long as the majority NO DIRECT military consequences, I guess anything, including deceptive measures in recruiting, goes. Thus, the cycle of historical amnesia is allowed to continue, and future U.S. military action will surely bring about more 9/11s.

Chris White is an ex-Marine infantryman with experience as a recruiter-assistant. He is currently working on his doctorate in history at the University of Kansas, Lawrence. He served from 1994-98, in Diego Garcia, Camp Pendleton, CA, Okinawa, Japan, and Doha, Qatar. He is also a member of Veterans for Peace.

I have got to tell this story. When I decided to goin the service in 1976 I first went to the Navy recruter, I filled out the form took my test and filled out the section, that said did tou ever use illegal drugs, Me being so nieve said yes I smoked marijuana and took acid, of course the Navy could not except this, they freaked, So I went next door and filled out the same paper work the same day in the Army recruters office and said no I never used drugs and I was in in two months. Oh I did have a ged, but before that I was a high school drop out and a marijuana and acid user.

Go figure.

I also was distinguest graduate out of my Ait school which was fort Gordon Georgia at Signal corp School. Also I was suad leader and made a first strip out of Basic. I had made Pfc by the time I went to Germany out of my school, I have many awards from the Army some signed by Colon Powell. I met him as he was my commander in Germany in the seventys.

There more to tell alot more I could right a book.

Go figure.

Some day I will tell you how when I met Colin Powell I ende up in Some very big trouble.

1467 ok I will tell a little more.

Anyway thae year was 1979 Germany, a field exercise called Red vs Blue, its about a moch attack from The Soviets. I was heavy into selling hash at the time for all my Army buddies, I got a good conection from a guy that was getting out. Some shave tail Luetenit was out for some brownie points. I was selling my last chunk of hash to the Battalion commanders driver. I look back over my shoulder and see that girl seen me hand over the peice, thats what we called it back then a 20 dollar chunk of hash. well I had just sold my last piece and I figured I was safe from what ever may come of it, she couldnt really see what I hnded the guy so I went about my business. That evening CID, Central Intelegence Division for those who dont know what CID is. Well, anyway they paid me a visit that night.I had 2000 dollars and a film container with hash residue is all I had. They charged me with an article 15 to wit possesion of marijuana.Of course you all know that Hash id made from an Idica strain of cannabis. Well everyone was out of hash by that next day, I guess everyone smoked it all up to destroy the eveidence.

More to come.
