Quantum Entanglement Holds DNA Together, Say Physicists
A new theoretical model suggests that quantum entanglement helps prevent the molecules of life from breaking apart.

There was a time, not so long ago, when biologists swore black and blue that quantum mechanics could play no role in the hot, wet systems of life.

Since then, the discipline of quantum biology has emerged as one of the most exciting new fields in science. It's beginning to look as if quantum effects are crucial in a number of biological processes, such as photosynthesis and avian navigation which we've looked at here and here.

Now a group of physicists say that the weird laws of quantum mechanics may be more important for life than biologists could ever have imagined. Their new idea is that DNA is held together by quantum entanglement.

That's worth picking apart in more detail. Entanglement is the weird quantum process in which a single wavefunction describes two separate objects. When this happens, these objects effectively share the same existence, no matter how far apart they might be.

The question that Elisabeth Rieper at the National University of Singapore and a couple of buddies have asked is what role might entanglement play in DNA. To find out, they've constructed a simplified theoretical model of DNA in which each nucleotide consists of a cloud of electrons around a central positive nucleus. This negative cloud can move relative to the nucleus, creating a dipole. And the movement of the cloud back and forth is a harmonic oscillator.

When the nucleotides bond to form a base, these clouds must oscillate in opposite directions to ensure the stability of the structure.

Rieper and co ask what happens to these oscillations, or phonons as physicists call them, when the base pairs are stacked in a double helix.

You should have posted less than 80% of the article I think.

It's an interesting reading but I have some issues about. How does quantum entanglement works in particles with such a great wavelenght as the constituents of the DNA molecule? If they are quantum particles, shouldn't their energy be quantified? How's the interaction with light (photons)?

dear 'op'

first good catch! have 5 stars from me.

second a purely hypothetical...

zenos paradox in conjunction with limit derivative infinity regressive based on ratios of phi for angstrom placements turned to wave forms?

in plain english as we get smaller and smaller the role of phi becomes increasingly important as the observational capacity is really an illusion ....the constant remaining phi?

dna helix has measurements of 34 angstroms long by 21 angstroms wide for each full cycle. both 34 and 21 are fibonacci numbers and their ratio closely approximates phi

their ratio is 1.6190476
Phi is 1.6180339

as we get infinitely smaller the closer we get to phi....we just cant observe it like zenos paradox??? fascinating read you found that fits perfectly with many other voices on the matter.

warm regards

Ok, I will remember that next time. Sorry. :( Let's hope that we can get some answers from physicists soon! I will be doing some digging and see if Bruce Lipton can help with that.

Glad to hear that you appreciate this, Edmond. I'm the girl who brought your attention to the "Plato code". (Same AC no.) I've been trying to catch up on learning about the Golden Ratio as much as my motherhood would allow me.

dear 'op'

first thankyou for bringing that to my attention ...it was a very good read.

Second PHi is a tough one to understand ...especially with motherhood but dont despair...
there are few things worth knowing in this world and math is one of them.

Thirdly not to derail ut I brought up the fibonacci regressive inn my other new thread on '''phi fibonacci and flowers ...complete colony collapse disorder'' ....I would copy paste for you but im on my crackberry.

The regressives to phi from fibonnacci is exactly what I believe is going on with your quantum entanglement issue.

I hope this helps you in your journey

Warm regards

Huhn. If someone would've ever asked me if quantum entanglement was involved with holding DNA together I would've just said, "Of course."

I mean, I don't see how it could be any other way. Not that I ever knew to think about it, but still, what's the big mystery?
