Is George Carlin Correct To Be Soooo Cynical About American Education???
In one of his last concerts, George Carlin presented a bleak vision of American education: “It will never, ever, ever be fixed. It won’t get any better. Don’t look for it....The owners of this country don’t want that... The real owners, the big wealthy business interests that control things and make all important decisions. They own you. They own everything... They own all the big media companies. So they control just about all the news and information you get to hear.... They want more for themselves, and less for everybody else.... They don’t want well informed, well educated people... They want obedient workers, people who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork...”

Carlin’s cynicism is certainly depressing, but is it correct? When I write about education, I’m always assuming that if only we are clever enough, we can figure out how to make things better. So here are three questions:

1) How true is Carlin’s cynical take on education and the "real owners"?

2) Ever since John Dewey, the top educators try to use the schools to create cooperative little socialists. So I see how bad education helps the Left... But wouldn’t the “real owners” be BETTER OFF if our citizens were smarter so the economy and our place in the world would be that much more secure? Most countries would think like this.

3) Carlin regards the media, the so-called liberal media, as foot soldiers for the "real owners." When I watch the newspaper in Norfolk not cover education, I see Carlin fulfilled right in front of me. But how do these liberal editors see their work? Do they know they have been co-opted?

he was spot on. you know it. i know it. we all know it on some level, we are just to brainwashed to think our way out of it. And I am the most guilty of that than anyone I know. I've become a droid, a drone, a controlled shell of a human being. It's hard to overcome, but i'm working on it.

I'm seeking an answer to this question on another thread regarding 9-11.

I'm seriously afraid that Carlin was right.

At least when I went to college after the Vietnam War, there seemed to be about 50% of the college community that didn't trust government. Now, it seems like the question doesn't even make sense to today's youth.

This is really bumming me out!

Yes he was absolutely right !! But there's more....

I can't believe the average US citizen between the ages of 20-30 can't even speak proper English, let alone tell you ANYTHING about history, geography, or our own form of government!!!!

It's INSANE!! You can see it right here on GLP... when it comes to grammar and vocabulary. YUK.

We should say to hell with public education and educate our own children (provided WE are well educated LOL).

George Carlin is dead on. Too bad too. When American schools went union our education system went down the toilet.

Unions only mean one thing, poor quality for more money. The only way they can pull it off is by extortion.

Yep, old George was right on but he missed the big change that being the influence of GLOBALISM. As long as we buy into this GLOBAL bullshit our education system will continue to dumb down our children as a necessary part of their adherence to the program. No history or government that promotes NATIONALISM. Use of machines to replace ones brain/memory with no thought to what happens when the machines breakdown. Stupidity abounds and passes for knowledge.

OP-

Most young people today can't count back change for a dollar. Jay Leno recently pointed out that most Americans don't know why we celebrate July 4th.

These examples are just scratching the surface.

Welcome to the rabbit hole, OP

No, Carlin's bitterness and paranoia completely overtook his comedic abilities in his later years.

The real problem with American education is the fact that we have much more dumb people in the country now than we did 50 years ago.

There's so much mental capacity that some people have. Just because they are not good in school doesn't mean they can;t be good manual laborers.

Any paranoia Carlin had was justified. The real question is, did the government kill him with their medical mafia for his political views?

Sorry GnG I can't agree with you. I taught for 41+ years and only retired 7 years ago and people aren't any dumber than they were 50 years ago proportionately. The problem is unlike 50 years ago we aren't attempting to teach them anything worthwhile. We coddle the little babies and continue to feed them PABLUM through the 12th grade. Then we send them on to so called colleges the best of which have to spend the better part of two years trying to remediate them before they actually can get going.
