with respect, if we are not running out of oil, explain two things for me...
1. in 1976 the min wage was 3.00 per hour and gas cost 38 cents a gallon, now the min wage is 9.00 per hour but gas costs 4.58 per gallon......Canadian figures!

2. if there is no oil shortage then why are we drilling in 20,000 ft of water off shore, and that includes Saudi Arabia..

Duh...Anything that has a limited supply will eventually run out, pretty simple IMHO.

A lot of the deep water drilling is due to environmental concerns/blocks which has prevented drilling closer to shore.

Oil Drum is mostly Greenies now - anti-CO2 on ideological grounds.

Abiotic oil is the main theory by which Russians find oil and so far it's working for them.

As for why oil prices are higher - that has to do with derivatives trading, not demand or supply.

Close the 'Enron Loophole' and oil prices would fall to about $15-20 a barrel.

Have you not ever heard of the Russian Theory of "abiotic oil"? The Russian's do not believe that oil is a fossil fuel(even when I was told in 4Th grade that oil came from dead dinosaurs, I was a bit in disbelief). This theory has been around since the 1970's, at least. The Russians believed that oil is constantly being replaced in the mantle of the earth (i.e.- the Tulleric realm). In other words, it is continually being replenished by the normal physiological actions of the earth in the mineral realm. To prove this theory the Russian's back in the late 70's drill the deepest well ever. It was much deeper that the Gulf well. They drilled below the level where fossil formation occurs. This was done in Siberia and on ground. What happened then was the same thing that happened in the GOM massive explosion because they have drilled into areas of massive pressure where the oil is being formed.

This is what BP did and they knew what they were doing when they did it and they knew what would happened because the same thing happened with the Russians. They have mapped these areas by satellite and know where the areas of highest pressure are to be found. The GOM has one of the largest reserves of oil in North America and what they have done is essentially drilled into an oil volcano. That will have tremendous implications for 100 yrs. to come. I believe this was an intentional attack on the USA done by TPTB to bring down our system and world population. Lets face it our government is not made up of Americans or else they would be doing something to stop this. BP is running the show and thumbing their nose at the EPA over the corexit issue. Corexit is the dispersant used on the Exon Valdez spill and the average life expectancy for these people was 51 years old. Even the people that lived in the area were also plagued with these and other health issues and their entire town was crushed. Check it out. They were awarded 5 billion in damages that they never collected to this day and the US Supreme Court reduced the settlement to 500 million and Exon has offered to settle the case with the few survivors for 3/4th of the 500 million. So fasism is alive and well in the old US of A.

Matt Simmons had founded Simmons & Company International back in 1974, which catered to massive oil companies, and retired in June 2010. Besides being an energy adviser to GW Bush, Simmons is a member of the CFR and the National Petroleum Council. He is a big supporter of the Club of Rome, which has had a profound impact on nation's governance of industry and infrastructure

He is mainly responsible for the U.S. concern over what he believes are dwindling Middle-East oil reserves. He has been charged for not providing solid scientific facts to back up his views on the Peak Oil Theory, and of misrepresenting the facts.

As was just mentioned, he has some controversial opinions on the BP Oil Spill, and has been interviewed often on this issue.

When you actually talk with some of these Peak Oil believers, they are very adamant about the future of civilization, and will paint the most horrible doom and gloom scenario imaginable. Most will admit that the U.S. cannot simply switch to alternative known sources of energy, and maintain the same way of life we have known.

I spoke with one of these gentlemen back in April of 2005, and they told me about a hurricane that would hit the Gulf Coast, and cause catastrophic damage to cities and the oil rigs. I didn't pay any attention to his prediction. Then in August of '05, Katrina happened. My reality collapsed.

The same gentleman told me that there would be a series of future events that would disrupt the flow of oil, and plunge the entire industrialized world into a third nation economy. The most shocking thing he told me was that it would become so bad here in the U.S., with the collapse of our centralized system of food distribution, and truckers would not be able to transfer foods and goods any longer.

He told me that it would lead to mass starvation, and people would start killing people for food, that many Americans would resort to cannibalism to survive, surprsing their prey with a baseball bat to the back of the head, since it was easier to do this than to hunt animals.

When I asked why they just wouldn't grow food or hunt, he replied that they did do that, but growing food takes time and knowledge, and that the hunters had hunted all the animals within a few months.

He kept talking as if this already had happened, which I found it very odd. He said that there would be a series of Energy Wars with nations fighting over natural resources.

He told me to imagine walking outside, and remove everything that I saw that was created by oil, or oil-byproducts. From simple things like electronics and clothes, to machines, buildings, etc, pretty much everything would be removed.

He also described this future, where everything was dark at night, and we had to cut down trees for fire and cooking.

I thought he was a nut, but I always remember back to the fact that he told me about Katrina a few months before it happened.

But there were a few other events he said would happen, and they grew progressively worse, but I don't remember the details. I do remember that one of them was a scenario where he described a terrorist attack at one of Saudi Arabia's largest oil plant, which he named, and he said that would be the final straw that plunged the world into a new Dark Age. He said the world is not and would not be prepared to avoid these events, because we needed to have acted about 20 years prior. The time range he provided was from 2005-2050

You're welcome, I've mentioned this story to my friends, and they did not believe me. They questioned not my honesty, but my mental state. What was I supposed to think? What had led up to the Katrina prediction from this Peak Oil guy, was that I kept pressing him for information that was short term, since much of what he described would happen over a 10-50 year period. He was adamant about referring to the Carter administration some supposed change in U.S. policy regarding the Middle East, and he gave me examples of civilizations that had risen, then fallen due to loss of natural resources. There was one more thing, but I forget now.

The Katrina event is what has had me stumped all along, though. I was unable to contact him after our initial conversations, he said that he had to protect his whereabouts and identity.

I probably did sound crazy to people. I didn't even know what to do with it, and I became very depressed. But like you said, it's important to be prepared for the worst. Why not? It doesn't hurt to make plans.
