Are Portland and Seattle prepared for a mega-earthquake?
A string of recent earthquakes along Western coastlines, from Mt. Redoubt in Alaska to Chile in South America, has led many to wonder if the Pacific Northwest is next. In fact, on July 19 a 5.1 magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Vancouver, British Columbia. (Breaking news: A 5.2 earthquake struck Wed. morning, July 28, off the Oregon Coast.)

Will Oregon buildings and roads crumble? Are local and state governments prepared? Do citizens have proper supplies in their homes should a massive quake bring local and regional commerce to a halt?

Half of Seattle will end up in Elliot bay as it was mostly built upon fill dirt.

Portland will suffer due to the same fact half of it will liquify due to being built on fill dirt and having a high moisture content.

This is true plus since they haven't known for that long that they have the potential for a 9+ they didn't have strict building codes for earthquakes until recently as California has.

They are trying to re-enforce schools, fire stations, etc. but what about all the businesses, bridges, dams and homes built before 1995?

If I lived there I would move especially if I had children. The adults choose to stay knowing all this but I feel sorry for the kids and animals who have no choice.
