Sean Penn skeptical about Wyclef Jeans presidential campaign in Haiti
Sean Penn, who has lived in Port-au-Prince Haiti for months to help manage thousands of displaced Haitians living in a camp, has begun to publicly criticize Wyclef Jeans campaign for President of Haiti.

In a statement released to CNN Penn explained, "What the Haitian people need now is a leader who is genuinely willing to sacrifice," I haven't seen or heard anything of Wyclef in these last six months since I've been in Haiti. I think he's an important voice. I hope he doesn't sacrifice that voice by taking the eye off the very devastating realities on the ground."

I had a feeling he would say something. I found out he's been down there the last 6 months about a week ago. I'm glad someone brought the question up.

I don't think he is doing that at all. The guy is a huge humanitarian and I'm pretty sure he is genuinly worried about this. Wyclef is all about money. I think he would be more like a warlord. lol

At first I thought Jean would be good for Haiti. I've learned
a lot from posts on GLP that he isn't what I thought he was
and he would be even worse for them. This would just be a
big ego trip for him. On this GLP has changed my mind. I
was very wrong about him.

As far as i know. The guy is a thug. Multiple movies, videos, interviews, statements, and performances prove that. He makes good music, but I wouldn't want him running a country.

I agree Sean Penn is somewhat of a douchebag....but he HAS been out there literally at ground level, helping people at a one on one basis.

I think he had made many valid points as to the agenda of Wyclef Jean. That guy is nothing more than a self admitted drug dealer turned musician through drug funds, he is also an admitted criminal, and now cause he has some money, he wants to get into the political arena because of his ego.
Haiti deserves more than that, and I do think Sean Penn is right to say these things.

People may not necessarily like the messanger, but the concern in the message is spot on. Wyclef Jean is a stupid, uneducated, self serving opportunist...not someone who is willing to sacrifice, fight the USA powers, and manage a deficit the size of Haiti's. I hope those Hatians dont get enamored with this Barack wannabe.

Thanks for the education GLPers.

I, also, was all for this guy. I was thinking here is a guy that doesn't have the criminal connections of a typical Haitian politician. Now I know he will be just as bad.

But I'm afraid that he will get elected. He has no opposition. Hopefully another outsider will run. America? France? There has got to be someone else.

Re: Sean Penn skeptical about Wyclef Jeans presidential campaign in Haiti
He probably knows about this and the fact that Wyclef Jean is funded by Brangelina's foundation "Make It Right".

FAKE IT RIGHT!

Here are 10 celeb charities that raised red flags, according to a Post examination of federal tax forms and other records.

1.) Yele Haiti (Wyclef Jean Foundation)

Former Fugees member Wyclef Jean's charity aims to address educational, environmental and emergency-relief issues in his native Haiti. It has a slick Web site and financial support from Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie but has not filed a US tax form since 2000. An insider at the charity told The Post that where the money goes in Haiti is a mystery, or if part of the haul went to purchase a television station in Port-au-Prince. Charity President Hugh Locke said, "We are in arrears in our filing." He said that large donations go directly to projects in Haiti, where the organization is registered as a charity. He said the missing IRS documents would be filed by the end of the year. The forms are required to allow them to receive donations that can be tax deductible and to avoid paying taxes on their donations. The charity also has not completed the required New York state registration, according to Attorney General's Office records. Meanwhile, Jean owes the state of New Jersey $183,172 in personal income tax, a sum Jean's spokesman said last month the singer was in the process of paying.

You're probably right, I just really dislike Sean Penn...not because of his beliefs or anything, he just seems like a really big asshole. But it is hard to discount the fact that Penn has been down there actually helping those people long after all the telethons and news coverage went away.

Have to admire that.

As for Wyclef Jean, I dislike him as well. And that's funny that you think he would be more like a warlord because that was my impression also.

Fortunately for Haiti, it sounds like Jean is up against some pretty serious candidates who already have records of serving their country...I don't know if that is a good or bad thing for the people, though.

Sean's parents were dyed in the wool, die hard communists. His pa was blacklisted by McCarthy.

Besides, his brother Chris had all of the family Hollywood talent.

Penn is always a contrarian indicator...as is CNN.

One thing for sure is if Jeans wins he will attract a lot of international attention. Money will pour in and new construction will start.

But then the world will find out he is a criminal and stealing their money. A few modern apartment buildings will get built, then Jean's mansion will be next. Then his favorite generals will get huge new houses built with foreign money. 98% of the people will still be homeless and the money supply will stop.

Same-O, same-O.

Penn has put his money where his mouth is. He hasn't bragged
about the work he did in New Orleans but he helped a lot of
people there. Yea, I don't get too impressed with celebrities
but after reading what I have about Jean lately I've changed
my mind about him, not because of what Penn thinks.

The very idea of Wyclef Jean running for president of Haiti just seems ridiculous. I'm assuming he was born there, right? But how long has it been since he's lived there? Like somebody else said, sounds like a huge ego trip. He thinks he's going to be some Obama-type figure.

Re: Sean Penn skeptical about Wyclef Jeans presidential campaign in Haiti
From Wikipedia regarding Yele Haiti:

The Foundation filed its tax forms for 2005–2007 all in August 2009, a delay Charity Navigator characterized as "odd" even among charities, and "beyond late".[20] Much of Yéle Haiti's money has been paid out to Wyclef Jean, his relative and fellow Yéle Haiti director Jerry Duplessis, or companies they own. For example, of the $1,142,944 in total revenue the foundation collected in 2006, at least $410,000 was paid directly to Jean and his business partner for rent, production services, and Jean's appearance at a benefit concert.[21] The Foundation paid $250,000 to Telemax, a television station controlled by Jean and Duplessis, $31,000 to rent its own offices from Platinum Sound owned by Jean and Duplessis,[22] and $100,000 for Jean's own performance at a benefit concert in Monaco, when Jean had been paid only $40,000 as headliner at 2002 festival at the top of his career with the Fugees.[23]

Hugh Locke, president of Yéle Haiti, said "I think people should be very comfortable that any money given to Yéle Haiti is going 100 percent to emergency relief." and that the group hopes to increase the percentage of its budget on services as it gains experience.[22] He described the concert payments as "not our finest hour".[23] A spokesman for Yéle Haiti's public relations firm described paying Jean's and Duplessis' companies as an opportunity to receive services at a "severely reduced" rate and a "significant discount".[22] Yéle Haiti, and its predecessor the Wyclef Jean Foundation, have been involuntarily dissolved by the Florida Division of Corporations on multiple occasions for failing to file required state disclosure reports.
