Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
I'm starting to think to return to a vegetarian diet again, because of spiritual reasons. Probably won't (yet) skip on fish, and might just eat some chicken sometimes...

Are there any guidelines/ideas to do a low carb diet without meat and not falling into the trap of potatoes, grains, meat, dairy, fruit... I'm mainly thinking of eggs, cheese, nuts, vegetables... Main problem in my mind is diner; can imagine eating some kind of salad with fatty cheese, fish, oil/mayonaise on top or veggies with sauce/oil...

Struggling to form an idea in my head how to make a diverse diet that's still low carb/high fat ánd gives me enough calories to stay healthy and avoid hibernation mode... Ideas?

It was nice to see this thread on page one today, been meaning to catch up with it and to get back closer to this diet again.

I was cooking for someone else this summer and in my effort to provide variety I got off this diet and did gain some weight even though I work a very physical job and walk everywhere. No big deal but it was nice being super skinny last winter, mainly because clothes fit better. Also when I weigh less my feet hurt less being on them all day, and this is important.

I quoted your post because I was doing this on a vegetarian diet, I did keep it up for I think a year and did lose a good amount of weight. Wasn't overweight to start with but had some meat on my bones, some padding, which is okay but like I said clothes fit better when you're really thin.

For a long time I've said I feel best when my diet is salad, eggs and cheese. With maybe some steamed vegetables, some nuts/trail mix, and a little fish sometimes to round things out.

I like to make vegetable soup, with some beans, maybe vegetable chili with beans, used to make those all the time, my downfall with those is that I like to eat them with crushed tortilla chips, so last winter I didn't even make soup or chili much at all.

The other day I made soup and made some brown rice to put in it for texture, I don't like soup to be soggy and mushy, or too thin and watery, I need it to have some kind of chewy quality to it. I am sure some brown rice is better than crushed tortilla chips so maybe I can get used to that.
In the past I also experimented with chopped lettuce on top of the soup.

Just checking in! I could stand a reboot on this diet. This is such a great thread, thanks Scorpion, htp and everyone who contributes!

Cream Cheese Jello

(Don't use Jello. The sugarless has Aspartame which you should NEVER ingest, and the regular has sugar.)

But you can use Knox Unflavored Gelatine

I made this recipe from a link I got earlier on in this thread about the Fat Fast to kick the metabolism back into fat burning.

I can't 100% recommend this desert because of the artificial sweeteners and flavors and colors.....but....without the "Jello" it is a healthy treat.

It is REALLY GOOD tasting.

2 packages Gelatine (Knox)

1 8oz package organic full fat cream cheese

1/3 cup full cream

1/3 cup sour cream (full fat)

1/3 cup extra virgin coconut oil

So......

1. Pour the Jello into a bowl--I used pyrex (add juice of one lemon, lime or 1/3 cup unsweetened cranberry juice)--let sit for a minute or two...

2. Add the 1 cup boiling water and continue stirring till dissolved

3. Add the 2/3 cup cold water

4. Pour dissolved Jello into blender

5. Add in the cream cheese pieces, the sour cream, cream, and coconut oil--

blend till well mixed

Sweeten with stevia--flavor or plain...could add vanilla ...

and pour into 8 small plastic (I used disposable) cups--small glass (like juice size) would do-- I just don't have a lot of small glass cups.

I put saran wrap on the tops and secured with rubber bands--not necessary

I placed in fridge.

So, 8..... 1/2 cup servings around 200-250 calories mostly from fat

I made a Lime flavor version.

Juice of two fresh limes

1 package cream cheese

2 small packets Knox Gelatine

1/3 cup cream

1/3 cup sour cream (full fat)

1/3 cup coconut oil

20 drops plain stevia (sweetener)--or lemon flavor

1. Squeeze the juice from the limes and strain into a glass bowl

2. add the 2 packets of Knox Gelatine And stir--let sit for 3 minutes

3. Add 1 cup boiling water

4. Add the packet of Lime Jell-O (stir till dissolved)

5. Add 2/3 cup of cold water and stir & add in the stevia drops

6. Add Jell-O to blender

7. Add in to Blender....Cream Cheese, Cream, sour cream, and coconut oil and blend till well mixed--less than a minute on high.

8. Divide (pour) into 8 small cups and refrigerate...

I'll have to try that Jello recipe.. Anything that can add variety is a good thing.

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
Two years today since I started eating this diet.

Just had a physical Tuesday. First since 2009. I weighed 200# in 2009. I came in at 174.4# on Tuesday. Weighed 245# 14 years ago.

It was a long haul. But this diet has been wonderful for me.
Weight has been stable in the mid 170's for over a year now. I feel fantastic. Amazing energy. Calmer(most of the time.)No dandruff. No dry skin issues. Rosacea gone. Hands and feet warmer in winter. Sleep better. Feel great.

I get my blood results tomorrow. I will report back.

Agree... I am a 5'6" woman who weighs 118 lbs. I eat A LOT of fats, but all good ones. You really have to stay away from cream, steak fat, chicken skin, chips... only in small doses. These should be eaten: Peanut butter, olive oil, (all kinds of healthy cooking oils), coconut oil (only the non-processed kind), flax oil, all unprocessed nuts & seeds, eggs, ANY fatty fish... you get the idea. The brain does not function well without fat... your skin needs it, as do your vital organs. A non-fat diet is completely unsatisfying, to boot!

I've been on the Atkins Diet twice and each time I lost 80+ in a year! Then I stalled out for a year, even started working out and the weight would not go away. Although, I was loosing inches but not lbs??
I'm planning on getting back on the plan soon, but would like to know if anyone else experienced the same and how did you break the long term plateau's.

losing inches not pounds....muscle weights more than fat...you were probably building muscle...thereby losing inches because you were toning up & building muscle.

First blood test in 3 years. 2 years since adopting this eating regime.

BP 108/80
Fasting Glucose 104
Triglycerides 52
Tot. Cholesterol 174
HDL 66
LDL 98
Chol./HDL ratio 2.64

Also, unfortunately, TSH(thyroid) is still coming up above range.

But, I feel great, so I am not gonna worry about it.

I would be interested if anyone has any comments on my results.

I felt great eating a diet with lots of fruit for snacks probably 40% of caloric intake from fruits. I kept meat and foods in the high glycemic index to a minimum. Exercising every two days. I felt great physically and mentally. I don't trust this high fat diet. Where do you get your vitamins with this meat diet?

I have lost over 100 pounds living on a high-fat diet.

I was 275 at 5'11". Now I am 175 and can run for miles without breathing hard. Low blood pressure too.

And I am 56 years old.

High fat diets, paleo diets, FTW.

Can you recommend other types of diets? I was on a low glycemic index diet and eating lots of fruit and I felt good. What's the difference between the two?

For those who have tried everything and do lose but cannot seem to keep the weight off, AND your CrP blood test came back a bit on the high side (indicating inflammation), please research 'Leptin Resistance', and 'Leptin Resistance Diet'.

Leptin Resistance addresses the vicious obesity AND inflammation cycle. There are certain anti-inflammatory foods you can eat to actually reverse inflammation.

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
Glad to see some new posts on this thread. I gained 3 pounds over the holidays, but it was the inflammation, moodiness and joint pain that killed me. I am back on track now and my knees and fingers feel so much better.
One of my favorite new lo carb discoveries is Philly cheese steak stuffed green peppers. Omg! So great!
This method of eating is the best for me and changed my life! I have been following this method for over two years. I never want to go back to the chubby and crabby person I was. Today I am smaller than all 3 of my 20-something daughters and feel as energetic as ever.
I love this diet, and I love Scorpio for putting this info out here so I could stumble across it. In the beginning I read this thread back and forth daily for encouragement and info. I don't know if I could have made it past the third week on this diet without having had the ongoing dialog here to lean on. There is a gold mine of information here and inspiration.

Here is a great video/interview of Dr Mary Vernon, MD, is one of the world's foremost experts on treating obesity and diabetes with low carbohydrate nutrition. She is a practicing family physician, educates doctors on low carb and is active in and former president of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (doctors specializing in treating obese patients).

Nobody knows more about the practicalities of low carb than dr. Mary Vernon. Here she explains it for you.

It is 32 minutes long , but well worth the watch, for anyone who wishes to hear about the very low carb success from a medical point of view--and when asked she responded that the low carb lifestyle was good for EVERYONE.

I tried that Atkins diet and had little to no success with it.
Isn't it a fact that if you drink lots of water, get plenty of excercise and cardiovascular activity and consume less calories than what you burn....that you WILL lose weight?

Wondering if anyone can tell me how long the detox period will last for a person who has eaten unhealthy for years and years? I need to loose a simple TON but more importantly I need to get healthy!!!!!!!

Yup, big wuss here. Tried the Atkins years ago and suffered such severe headache and stomach issues, just gave up!

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
It's interesting to see this thread again and to read what was posted a couple of years ago -v- what is being posted now. I posted a couple of times early on. I've really been on a kind of personal journey the past few months with my weight.

I've discovered a new way to eat but it's not necessarily low carb. I've been very successful, too. My experience was that early last June, I didn't eat wheat for three days. I think it was because it was early summer and I was more interested in smoothies, salads, and the likes - it wasn't a conscious decision. I discovered I felt so much better but didn't know why. I reviewed my diet and realized it was the lack of wheat. In doing research, I learned that gluten sensitivities are hereditary and I know from doctors' tests that my son is sensitive. Hmmm, I thought, that probably means I am, too. So, I dropped all wheat and gluten products from my diet.

I have eaten lots of raw fruits, raw and steamed veggies, dairy products, and meats. No processed foods at all. I've been walking 1 mile per day. I lost a ton of weight (just slightly over 40 lbs)and improved my health tremendously. I didn't realize that eating wheat was behind my cravings for sugar. I always thought eating the sugar itself caused my cravings and couldn't figure out why, even when I stayed away from white sugars and HFCS I still drooled over baked goods. I don't crave them at all now.

However, I have also discovered that if I slip and eat wheat, the inflammatory response makes me gain 3-4 pounds overnight and then I crave junk again. This isn't just because of the insulin spike issue, but because of the specific compounds wheat contains.

If you do research on wheat intolerance, you will find that wheat causes all kinds of problems in our modern diets (diets which are filled with processed wheat products) - and the consumption of our modern wheat pretty much mirrors the increase in obesity. Heart disease, diabetes, fibromyalgia, joint pain (especially feet, ankle, wrist, hand), near-sightedness and night blindness, etc., wheat can play a role in so many of our modern ills.

Above poster here - I meant to say I walk one hour per day at a brisk clip while walking the dog (I'm not quite sure where the mile came from - :0). I haven't been exercising a ton or anything, but I am pretty active normally with gardening, cleaning and such.

It's also important if you are getting up in years like I am (50), that you wear good, supportive shoes. When your feet hurt everything hurts and you don't want to do much but sit in a chair.

What quantity of protein recommended for this type of diet?

I am believer in paleo / low carb natural real food but hear different opinions on amount of protein. Some say eat all the protein you desire (be naturally self-regulating) others say limit protein (use a formula based on your weight) because protein in excess of your daily cellular repair needs cause some metabolic problems.
