Re: Why Should We have to Spend More Money For Healthier Food?
People buy non-organic for other reasons than price.

it usually looks better

it usually 'keeps' longer

But here's an example of why organic costs more:

A farmer has a choice between a chaep, effective chemical to control weeds, one to control insects and one to control disease (from molds etc). Or he can choose an equally expensive but less effective organic product for insect and another for disease. He can do companion cropping or cultivate more often (fuel and labor) to control weeds. The organic method also has costs in production reductions. Weeds sap nutrients and bugs eat/damage plants and their fruits.

For fertilizer, a farmer can spray liquid nitrogen (think ammonia cleaners, cheapo), or haul tons of manure or compost, very labor and fuel intense.

Free range eggs? Losses in eggs and birds, and much more labor to gather the eggs. Hens aren't 'forced' to lay nor are they fed chemicals to produce bigger eggs.

Organic farms must be govt certified, that has a cost.

The old, natural methods can't compare in production to chemical methods. BUT, we are depleting the land and polluting the air and water. The cheap food will have a cost in the near future.

Very loical obesrvation on the part of OP.

Realizing that common sense is not common anymore, I want to bring YOUR attention once more to the logic of the post. At hand.

Why would you need to pay more for the healthier, NATURAL type of nutrition? If you dont get it you must hold US type of passport, first thing that comes to mind, or are on similar intellectual level of development I guess, because it really baffles me. Think again, do you need to pay more for the most natural source of things you eat? It naturality, it would create the economic environment that is at present replaced by the GMO commercial agriculture econmy, that would create much more good to humanity (as some would like to term society) that in term would be as cost effective as some argue the present GMO industry stimulated market does.

Just think for yourself, I know the more pressure the more resistance, but why resist common sense?

The trick is to avoid "health food" stores that are just trying to make you feel trendy and then charge you more.

There is a little market near our house, we can buy 9 bags of locally-grown/produced groceries for about $11. Independently-owned.

Search around, these places do exist.

With healthy food, one doesn't get so hungry and snack or evereat due to empty or fatty or sugary calories.

And also little markets are available mostly for those closer to the country. If not, they can be as pricey as the health food stores.

Expensive cleaners and body products, there are many very cheap, effective homemade recipes. Most of it is just research and letting go of the mainstream Standard American Diet (SAD) "memes".

It already does, but the secret is kept for the profits of the corporations. It's called...take your pick...disease, loss of productivity, obesity, health care, sick care, Obama care, Medicare...without knowledge, the people perish.

You make a lot of sense and raise some very good points.

I have read that without modern farming techniques, with all the fuel and chamicals, the world can only provide food for 2 billion souls. 4 billion must go.

LOL

OP, why don't you go out and hand-spade a plot of ground, plant some seeds, and try to grow them without pesticides, a fence, pulling weeds, or watering your crop and see what you end up with.
 Quoting: Faith

faith nailed it...
OP is a paid disinformant in my opinion...
cause his point of view is very disinformed, and i cannot imagine any intelligent person who has actually had an organic garden could say things like this...
i will say it again..
it is labor intensive...
if you are putting more labor into it
it usually equates to paying more for hired help to hand cultivate the crop instead of paying for cheap pesticides...
i have spent many hours on a small plot...
i value my time spent
and if i were to equate that to money
to sell
i would out price any
whole or organic foods market
not only because of the
time
effort
and skill required of the job
but also the incredible quality
people who know how to love what they do
love where they spend their money as well
and it has value

the united states pays the least out of any other world body for food as compared to salary... it is only because of low quality processed foods... and now everyone seems to expect to pay less... just like with everything the cheap manufacturing produces, cheap throw away cars, cheap shoes you replace every year or every other, and the like, instead of paying the extra (money=time, effort, investment)and getting a quality product which not only outlives the cheaper version, but is of better quality...

people, please look carefully at how the discussion has progressed in this thread... think of how psychology works and how much money has been spent on paying really, really smart people to unravel the human psyche...

Eating cheap food means getting sicker faster. So it doesn't cost more to eat organic.

To make the those with disadvantages in life suffer more.
To kill off those, slowly, who were not born into wealth?
Organic=less pesticde=less money/(you would think)less energy.

Commercially Grown=More energy overall-least nutritious.

Why? Why would you do this to other people. Because they are the OTHERS?

If one ever has a problem with a product, I always suggest they start their own company and build or produce it better.

You win, (making millions) and the public wins by paying less for their healthier food.
