Hello Silent Companion - I believe the uvula is the "trigger" mechanism to channel food and/or air into the proper tube. When you swallow food, the uvula triggers the windpipe valve to close so that food doesn't go down your wind pipe. That's why sometimes we may get a piece of food "down the wrong pipe":-) and then cough a bunch to get it back up!

Perhaps there is more to the uvula if ST can elaborate:-)

Ahhh thank you for asking, I am an old lady too:-) We are all old in more ways than one if you know what I mean.

It's been weird in my area of the woods. Unseasonably cold in Oregon; we just had two days of snow which covered the daffodils; They turned their little flower faces down to ready themselves for the heaviness of the snow. So beautiful.

I have a momma deer and her two babies every morning in my yard eating my grass. She has a yearling and a bambi with the spots almost gone. She'll chase the yearling away soon getting ready for fall.

It's so nice to live on top of the mountain at 1000 feet. I have my city "face" where I work in the big city, then I put on my country "face" and drive home along a winding river to my home on top of a mountain. There are pockets of methane underground near where I live and quite a few spidery veins linking the methane pockets. I guess my mountain is going to blow sky high when the time comes. I hope it is fast and not lingering:-)

I'm originally from Florida but have enjoyed living many beautiful places in the ~States, and now Europe. Hi ST, I've noticed widespread temperature anomalies occurring in much of Canada and the USA lately. I suspect likely worldwide as well. How long can the ecological systems hold up with such widespread deviations from the norms? Can they hold up quite easily or are the somewhat more delicate than that? I do notice a lot of vegetation dying. Trees and shrubs that are quite old. I can only speak for my one specific area on that though. Thanks.

One function of the uvula is to cover the wind pipe ( trachea) opening when you swallow food, so that it goes down the esophagus not into the lungs.

It may also function in the generation of Tarzan yells. :)
