You´ve referred to ancient Babylonian and Sumerian ideas quite a bit. It seems these cultures may have experienced and recorded an extraterrestrial presence on Earth and/or a cosmic cataclysm. Like the Egyptians, they seem to have actually interacted with their "gods" at some point in the remote past.

After I posted all that material about the Yazidi and the Mandaeans, I suddenly thought: where did the Babylonians go?

I mean, there´s a big discontinuity between their ancient culture and the modern societies of Iraq, due to the success of Islamic empires based at Baghdad - a new city founded away from ancient Babylon. The same thing happened in Egypt, where Cairo was founded away from the old centres of Egyptian culture, like Alexandria.

Just as Christianity swept away the pagan religions of the Roman Empire, so Islam suppressed the pagan elements of the Middle East. In fact this pattern is repeated all over Europe and Asia: the Druids were suppressed by the Romans; the Christian mob burnt the Library at Alexandria; various Chinese emperors destroyed repositories of ancient knowledge; the Mongols swept away the ancient kingdoms of Central Asia; the Spanish went out of their way to wipe out South American civilisations...

Is this a deliberate human amnesia or was it motivated by something, or someone?

The old beliefs, containing links to the original Age of the Gods, were denounced and thrown away. Their followers were persecuted. But what if they´d survived in the form of sects like the Yazidis and Mandaeans, or the European heretics like the Cathars. Or indeed, with the Templars, Masons and alchemists?

What I´m saying is this: over the past 2000 years, the records of ancient human-alien contact have been carefully erased or dismissed. Only secret groups have kept these things alive until the present day. Now we have another explosion in contact events and the old myths are returning to haunt us.

There are a number of ancient religious groups in Iraq that are neither Christian nor Muslim but use ideas drawn from older sources. The Kurdish group referred to are probably the Yezidis, who have existed for at least 2000 years and probably longer.

The other especially interesting group is the Mandaeans, the only surviving ancient Gnostic sect. They live on the borders of Iraq and Iran and hold that John the Baptist, not Jesus, was the Messiah. The Yazidi worship Malak Ta’us, apparently a pre-Islamic peacock angel who has fallen into disgrace. Malak Ta’us has links to Mithraism and, through it, to Zoroastrianism. The Yazidi maintain a well-preserved culture, rich in traditions and customs.

Yazidi believe in God, the creator, but his role stops there. The active forces in their religion are Malak Ta’us and Sheik Adii.

According to the Yazidi, Malak Ta’us is a fallen peacock angel who repented and recreated the world that had been broken. He filled seven jars with his tears and used them to quench the fire in Hell. Yazidism also includes minor deities and some clans venerate Sheikh Adii as a saint, subservient to Malak Ta’us. There are also 6 other minor deities that are honored.

The Yazidi holy books are the Book of Revelation and the Black Book. The latter forbids eating of lettuce or butter beans and wearing of dark blue. The historical status of the book is questionable.

Yazidi are exclusive and do not reveal most of their secrets to the uninitiated. The twice-daily prayer services must not be performed in the presence of outsiders, and are always performed in the direction of the sun. Wednesday is the holy day but Saturday is the day of rest. There is also a three-day fast in December.

The most important ritual is the annual six-day pilgrimage to the tomb of Sheikh Adii in Lalish, north of Mosul, Iraq. During the celebration, Yazidi bathe in the river, wash figures of Malak Ta’us and light hundreds of lamps in the tombs of Sheikh Adii and other saints. They also sacrifice an ox, which is one reason they have been connected to Mithraism.

Yazidi society is hierarchical, with a prince (emir) as its secular leader and a chief sheikh as its religious leader.
