Conversion: its range and variety

When we hear the word conversion, we tend to think of religion or perhaps
currency. But more generally, any significant change in opinion, belief,
practice or worldview may be called conversion. Some types of conversion may be
less dramatic than religious conversion in their open declaration, but can be no
less significant in the long run for cultural and social history, and for
individuals also. [In science the word is used in other meanings.]

Consider the idea of the flat earth and other now obsolete worldviews that were
once regarded as the truth by our distant ancestors. Not many in our generation
subscribe to these. Or again, consider the rigid rules of race purity, class
superiority, and endogamy to which some people no longer attach the same
importance that previous generations did. Or even the adoption of a democratic
governmental framework in lieu of systems in which feudal lords and maharajas
rule the land. These are also examples of conversion.

Or again, in the transformation that occurs in the mind of a growing individual
as a result of schooling, not only is ignorance replaced by knowledge, but
many previous impressions are significantly re-formed. In this sense, any mental
training, be it in a religious or a secular setting, is a mode of conversion.
When the conversion is from darkness to light, from misinformation to valid
knowledge, from hurtful tendencies to caring values, it is good education. When
it tends to stifle the inquiring mind into meek submission to truths that can't
be questioned or critiqued because they are supposed to rest on the alleged
sanctity of a source, or with threats to one's safety here on earth and in the
hereafter, that too is a kind of conversion: indoctrination. When religious
indoctrination injects frenzy for one's own and contempt for other groups, it is
religious conversion of the worst sort: fanaticism.

When India changed from local languages and Sanskrit to English as a medium of
education, she was converted in important ways for the good and for the bad.
When countries began to teach post-Copernican astronomy, physics and biology in
schools, and accept the technology that follows from these, that was mass
intellectual conversion. The inscription into law of freedom and equality for
all, the recognition of human dignity, allowing women higher education, and
giving them the right to vote: all these arose from the intellectual conversion
of the leaders of peoples and nations.

As with rock and soil, we are all gradually undergoing conversion, whether we
like it or not. It is impossible to live in the modern world without being
converted in recognizable or unrecognized modes, in conscious and unconscious
ways. Every book or article we read, every news item we watch or listen to,
every preacher we take seriously, affects our worldviews in ways slight and
subtle, or drastic and dramatic. We can thus be converted to alter our
worldviews and perspectives. People who switch political parties or the
candidate of their initial choice undergo conversion too.

We are, one and all, both enriched and burdened by the inputs we constantly
receive. Our minds can be expanded by good education, as they can become warped
by malicious propaganda. We can be enriched by the culture in which we grow
and the language in which we express ourselves. But we are also constrained, in
many pleasant and in some unhappy ways, by the religion and tradition, the
customs and practices into which we have been converted in our childhood or
later. We may learn to love, and also to hate, from the conversions we have
undergone.

It is puerile and naïve to disagree that The Lord is one. He appeared as a fire column to Moses to hand over instructions and he appears as fire column to us also.

When Veda says

Note: Some people remind me that this hymn is for Agni. It is true that the hymn is for Agni. But these people cannot digest that Agni is Rudra. Soul of all Gods is Rudra.
Some people (same set of people) again say that Siva is mentioned as the Supreme Lord in the Tamasic Puranas only. This is a blatant lie, perpetuated either due to ignorance or willfully.

Some people have also stated that Vedas are the source of all contradictions and hence they want Krishna out of the folds of Sanatana Dharma. They forget that the contradictions are in their minds and their so-called Ego (Maya).

In fact, Puranas only name Brahman as Maha-Visnu, Rama, and Krisna. In Vedas and Vedanta, Brahman is all – the root being Rudra. In Vedas there is no Maha-Visnu. The followers of Sanatana Dharma see no contradiction in this. They know that One Supreme Being only manifests as everything. Vedas declare that: “To the earthly beings, Brahman will be known as Rama”.

During this time, many parts of the brain become active, the body becomes rigid, and we begin to dream (or more accurately, dreamers that are awakened from this state are more likely to report dreams and longer, richer dreams, than most other dream states.) It is as though the brain were like a computer that has been taken offline but kept running. While dreaming, it is functioning much in the same way as waking, but the inputs and outputs and connections to normal feedback from the environment are missing or dampened.


(A) Activation.

Activation includes the electrical output of the brain's surface as measured by EEG Electroencephalograms and micro-flows of blood into active areas of the brain as measured by imaging machines such as PET and MRI. This allows us to determine what areas of the brain are in operation and active. Unfortunately, EEGs only show general surface areas and only a handful of brain imaging studies have been done on dream sleep, and all of these (as of 2003) within REM. (As mentioned above, dreaming can occur outside of REM sleep and we are waiting for brain imaging studies with NREM focus as well as in dreaming, lucid dream focus.).

In general, when awake, our brain shows low-voltage(how high) fast pattern, which print out like the line of an eyebrow. During REM, the brain will show waves similar to waking; low-voltage, fast pattern. SOME AREAS OF DIFFERENCE
The main areas of difference are in the classification of the human principles and the 'planes' of being. These differences stemmed from the division in the AB/CWL system of the physical plane into seven subplanes, with three of them regarded as dense physical and four as 'etheric', a term first used by Leadbeater to describe four states of matter he had observed during a clairvoyant examination of the common physical elements. In the book OCCULT CHEMISTRY which records some prolonged and painstaking investigation work done by Leadbeater and Besant over about three decades in their discoveries of the graded formation and the nature of the subatomic aggregations that make up physical atoms, there is a passage toward the end describing four pre-normal states of the common elements of Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Oxygen which Leadbeater named 'etheric'. He added that this was done 'perhaps unadvisedly' (see OCCULT CHEMISTRY revised edition 1919, table opposite page 7, and Appendix after page 109). He said this because of the sense in which the word ETHER was then being commonly used. Ether was then regarded as the postulated universal all-pervading 'substance' which conveyed electromagnetic vibrations such as heat, light, electric charge, etc., throughout space and through a vacuum. Nevertheless, the term ETHERIC as above defined was adopted and became generally used thereafter in the AB/CWL literature, making three gross states, viz. solid, liquid and gaseous, and four etheric states. It is important to note that these investigations were done clairvoyantly, or, in the author's parlance, using astral sight (presumably in Blavatsky's nomenclature). This is important because, according to the Blavatsky teachings, there is a laya center, or neutral condition between each plane of Cosmos and it is explained that senses of a different order are needed for each plane. In other words, physical senses will not respond to 'astral' stimuli and vice versa. This means that anyone using 'etheric' (astral) sight could not be seeing physical matter. What would be seen would be the etheric (astral) counterpart of the physical, not the physical itself. In order to examine these 'etheric' subatomic structures Leadbeater had to use a special power of the will (siddhi) to break down the atoms from their normal state (of gaseous) to the abnormal disintegrated substates which he saw.

It must be stressed, however, that these sub-states of matter were created by Leadbeater using his siddhi, and that they do not exist in the normal way, either in the 'etheric' (astral) plane or at physical level. They have never been observed as existing in the 'free' state at physical level, although specimen states corresponding to them may exist under abnormal conditions, for example during sophisticated and powerful experiments. If they exist at physical level, they would be observable by normal physical senses or suitable sense-extending instruments. Similarly the astral (Blavatsky) world being that from which all that is in the physical is protected, would contain the counterparts of 'etheric' atomic states normally (i.e., without Leadbeater having to break down atoms into their constituent parts). However, they do not, or he would have seen them without having to use his siddhi. If these 'etheric' states do not exist at physical level, there is no matter of which the 'etheric' double could be composed. That there was, was an assumption made by Leadbeater. This assumption could have been checked by his clairvoyantly examining an Etheric Body direct. There is no record of such an examination and presumably none was made, i.e. the assumption of the composition of an Etheric Body was not checked by direct observation, neither was the real existence of such a body (as described) ever established by him or any other person. The 'etheric' states of physical matter, or its astral Blavatsky counterpart, were 'created' by Leadbeater, and the idea of an 'etheric' body or semi-physical plane, was an unsound deduction.

LEADBEATER'S 'ETHERIC' STATES OF MATTER
The conception of an 'Etheric Body' and its location on an 'etheric' semi-physical plane arose from the naming as described of what might be regarded as the formative stages of the atoms of common chemical elements, by a series of aggregations of what Besant and Leadbeater called the ultimate physical atom (Anu). It is important to note that, whereas in such a developmental stage, i.e., moving from one 'etheric' state to the next, there is a change in atomic structure, but in the three normal states of matter, i.e., solid, liquid and gaseous, there is no such change. This is an inconsistency from the normal process of change of state. Besant refers (on page 72 of THE ANCIENT WISDOM) to these etheric stages as 'higher' than the physical atoms of science. There is a serious objection to this contention in that the 'etheric' states are clearly formative, i.e., more primitive states than those of the elements as they now exist. If there were such a thing as an Etheric Body it would be lower on the evolutionary scale than the physical body. Furthermore, as pointed out above, apart from the chemical elements (listed in the periodic table) composed according to Leadbeater of the subatomic particles of his investigations, which comprise the 'matter' of our objective world, Leadbeater's sub-particles have normally no independent existence. Therefore no bodies, and no plane, could be composed of them. Besant later, consistently with the original (Blavatsky) literature, added 'fire' to the gross physical states, corresponding the classical four elemental states of Earth, Water, Air and Fire and the invisible beings, the elementals, supposed in mediaeval times to have been associated with them, viz. the gnomes, the sylphs, the undines and the salamanders. These four Elements correspond in the original literature to the tattvic states of matter which include Fire but the AB/CWL classification in OCCULT CHEMISTRY omits Fire as a state of matter, having however its four etheric states. If Fire is included as an element there is room only for three etheric states. In Blavatsky's classical scheme there are seven tattvic states. TATTVAS AND CORRESPONDING STATES OF MATTER In several places, Blavatsky identified the four states of matter, viz. earth, water, air, fire, and associated them with elementals of corresponding classes and with the Tattvas under the Hindu names of Prithivi, Apas, Tejas, Vayu. Continuing up the tattvic scale she put the fifth as Alaya or Akasa, and then mentioned two more above that, viz. a sixth, Anupadaka and a seventh, Adi. These are the expressions used (BCW, XII, 614) and compared with the AB/CWL nomenclature in the table below:

In the SD III Table the fifth Tattva (Alaya) is referred to as Akasa, but is the equivalent of the second differentiation from Adi: commonly in the text of the SD Akasa is synonymous with Aether, i.e., the One Element. Alaya is referred to elsewhere as (and corresponds to) Ether. Further it must be noted that the Table in THE SECRET DOCTRINE shows the correspondences of the Tattvas with, among other things, the human Principles, which include the Linga Sarira (as such). Ether is significantly mentioned (SD, I, 12) wherein it says,

For clearer understanding on the part of the general reader, it must be stated that Occult Science recognizes SEVEN cosmic elements, four entirely physical and the fifth (Ether) semi-material, as it will become visible in the air toward the end of our Fourth Round, to reign supreme over the others during the whole of the Fifth. The remaining two are as yet absolutely beyond the range of human perception. These latter will appear as presentments during the sixth and seventh Races of this round, and will become known in the sixth and seventh Rounds respectively.Obviously the first four entirely physical elements are those enumerated above and the fifth, Ether, is in the process of manifesting now, but the other elements, whether regarded as Ethers or not, are not yet manifest on our globe. There is therefore nothing in the HPB/Masters system that could correspond to the AB/CWL system's four ethers or etheric states of matter.

SUBATOMIC STATES OF MATTER
It can be asked, if the above is true, what is the matter that is manifest at spiritualistic seances as ectoplasm and of what are the 'auras' of Kirlean photography composed? To answer the second question first, Kirlean photographs are relatively high voltage discharges affected by the emanations from living bodies, or where a part of a body has been detached (cut-off or severed by accident) the astral (not etheric) model still remaining intact effects the discharge. An understanding of this involves a knowledge of how forms or models in the astral are projected into objectivity at physical level. The first question concerning the exuding of the matter called ectoplasm from mediums (spiritualistic) during seances involves a process of the disintegration of the physical substance of the medium's body, i.e., the creation of a special state of physical matter for the time being. The phantom's weight increases as that of the medium correspondingly decreases. Ectoplasm is exuded as an amorphous mass from an orifice, e.g., mouth or nostril, and then it, or some of it, assumes a form, or a number of forms, of recognizable likenesses. These are impressed on the substance by psychic (astral) force by elementals from patterns in the minds of those present or in the Astral Light. Blavatsky describes (SD, I, 257) what characteristic of matter will correspond to the 'etheric' state when it does manifest, and she says it will be that of 'permeability'. Along with it a sixth sense will develop in man which will enable him to see 'through' solid matter. Not only that, in the then proper 'etheric' state a solid object will be able to pass through another solid one, say a wall, or knots will be able to be tied in an endless cord, etc. This is something that elementals are now able to do and sometimes do at seances. If the etheric states as described by Leadbeater were of this nature this state of permeability and the sixth sense would also be here now, but they are not. It should be noted that, just as Leadbeater 'created' his etheric states of matter, so there must be other states of matter than those we normally know -- as implied a number of times by Blavatsky -- which do not ordinarily exist in a free state. An example of the temporary creation of one of these abnormal states would be that of the endless cord knots just cited, wherein abnormal states of matter would have been created by the Elementals.

JAINA MYTHOLOGY.

The mythology of the Jainas, whilst including many of the Hindu
divinities, to which it accords very inferior positions, is altogether
different in composition. It has all the appearance of a purely
constructed system. The gods are classified and subdivided into orders,
genera, and species; all are mortal, have their ages fixed, as well as
their abodes, and are mostly distinguished by cognizances _chihnas_
or _lâńchhaṇas_. Their Tîrthakaras, Tìrthamkaras, or perfected
saints, are usually known as twenty-four belonging to the present age. But
the mythology takes account also of a past and a future age or renovation
of the world, and to each of these aeons are assigned twenty-four
Tîrthakaras. But this is not all: in their cosmogony they lay down other
continents besides Jambûdvîpa-Bharata or that which we dwell in. These are
separated from Jambûdvîpa by impassable seas, but exactly like it in every
respect and are called Dhâtuki-kanda and Pushkarârddha; and of each of
these there are eastern, and western Bharata and Airàvata regions, whilst
of Jambûdvîpa there is also a Bharata and an Airâvata region: these make
the following ten regions or worlds:—

1. Jambûdvîpa-bharata-kshetra.
2. Dhâtukî-khaṇḍa pûrva-bharata.
3. Dhâtukî-khaṇḍa paśchima-bharata.
4. Pushkarârddha pûrva-bharata.
5. Pushkaravaradvîpa paśchima-bharata.
6. Jambûdvîpa airâvata-kshetra.
7. Dhâtukî-khaṇḍa pûrva-airâvata.
8. Dhâtukî-khaṇḍa paśchima-airâvata.
9. Pushkarârdhadvîpa pûrva-airâvata.
10. Puskarârddha paśchima-airâvata.

To each of these is allotted twenty four past, present and future Atîts or
Jinas,—making in all 720 of this class, for which they have invented

A circadian rhythm is a roughly-24-hour cycle in the biochemical, physiological or behavioral processes of living entities, including plants, animals, fungi and cyanobacteria (see bacterial circadian rhythms). The term "circadian", coined by Franz Halberg,[1] comes from the Latin circa, "around," and diem or dies, "day", meaning literally "approximately one day." The formal study of biological temporal rhythms such as daily, tidal, weekly, seasonal, and annual rhythms, is called chronobiology.

Circadian rhythms are endogenously generated, and can be entrained by external cues, called Zeitgebers, the primary one of which is daylight. These rhythms allow organisms to anticipate and prepare for precise and regular environmental changes.

The world we see is nothing other than the form of the five sense-knowledges [sight, sound, smell, taste and touch]. Those five sense-knowledges are known through the five sense-organs. Since the one mind perceives the world through the five sense-organs, say, can there be a world apart from the mind?

Although the world [the seen] which is in front of us and the mind [the seer] rise and set together, it is by the mind alone that the world shines. The whole [purnam] which is the base for the world and the mind to rise from and set in, but which Itself shines without rising or setting – that alone is the Reality.

Whoever worships [the Supreme Reality] in whatever form, giving it whatever name, that is the way to see that Reality in [that] name and form, since it is possible [to see it thus]. Yet knowing one’s own truth in the truth of that Supreme Reality, subsiding [into It] and being one [with It], is the true seeing. Know thus.

On scrutiny, where is time and where is space, [where is anything] except ‘we’ [Self], the clearly known existing Reality? If we are the body, we shall be involved in time and space; but are we the body? Since we are [the same] one now, then and ever, [the same] one in space here, there and everywhere, we, the timeless and spaceless ‘we’ [Self], alone are.

To those who have not known Self and to those who have known [Self], this body of flesh is ‘I’; but to those who have not known Self, ‘I’ is limited to the measure of the body, whereas to those who have known Self within the body [i.e., in the lifetime of the body], ‘I’ shines as the limitless Self. Know that this indeed is the difference between these two.

To those who have not known [Self] and to those who have known [Self], the world in front of us is real; but to those who have not known [Self], the reality is limited to the measure of the world [i.e. to its names and forms], whereas to those who have known [Self], the reality shines devoid of [name and] form as the substratum of the world. Know that this is the difference between these two.

The argument as to which wins, fate or free-will, which are different from each other, is only for those who do not have knowledge of the root of fate and free-will [namely the ego, which is itself unreal]. Those who have known [the non-existence of] the self [the ego self], which is the one base of fate and free-will, have given them up [i.e. have given up both fate and free-will, and also the argument about them]. Say, will they get entangled in them again?

One’s seeing God without seeing oneself, the seer of the objects seen, is but seeing a mental image. He who, by losing the base [the ego], sees Self, the source of himself, alone truly sees God, because Self is not other than God.
