America´s top arms control diplomat, John Bolton, recently left Moscow in defeat. For two days he begged the Kremlin to curtail its nuclear assistance to Iran. The Kremlin told him not to waste his breath. Russia is determined to help Iran build a nuclear power plant. Now here is a question for the inquisitive: Why would a country that is floating on oil need nuclear power? After all, nuclear power is comparatively expensive. So what is Tehran aiming at? Here is another question: Why would Russia want to help Iran develop nuclear power? There is only one logical answer. Russia would like to expand the threat posed by regimes hostile to the United States (regimes like Iran).

This week George Jahn of the Associated Press reported that U.N. inspectors have "found traces of highly enriched, weapons-grade uranium at an Iranian nuclear facility…." Iranian officials say that the equipment, shipped from Russia, came packaged that way -- sprinkled with particles of enriched uranium. Let us admit the plausibility of this explanation. But consider the profound admission that it contains. If traces of enriched uranium have been found on equipment shipped to Iran, then the equipment has evidently been used in the processing of weapons-grade uranium. The implication is clear. Thanks to Russia, Iran now possesses equipment used in processing weapons-grade uranium.

Some atomic energy officials privately believe that Russia has assisted North Korea´s nuclear weapons program. The nasty regime in Pyongyang already has a couple of nuclear bombs and promises to build dozens more. Of course, Russia is supposed to be our ally in the Far East. Look at the outward show the Kremlin makes, and the explanations the Kremlin offers, to belie any and all suspicion. Playing the part of America´s ally, concerned for North Korea´s stability, Russia´s Pacific Fleet has been engaged in a massive military exercise.

The present exercises involve surface vessels, submarines, naval air forces, marines and coastal forces. These maneuvers appear to be a continuation of exercises conducted last May with the Indian Navy in which Russian strategic TU-95MC bombers hit waterborne targets in the Indian Ocean. These strikes were intended to simulate an escalation of regional tensions into a world war. In terms of air operations Russian sources admitted: "The air strikes did - in what certainly is a signal on the global strategic level - rehearse nuclear strikes against targets in the USA and UK, especially the search for liquidation of the U.S. Navy´s aircraft carrier shock groups."

We read the following excerpt from Pravda: "During the [August] exercises, the Russian troops will work on a complex of training missions aimed at disabling the U.S. orbital group of space satellites. This is important to break the stable functioning of the NAVSTAR global positioning system, the optoelectronic prospecting satellites Keyhole, and the radar reconnaissance satellites LaCross."

Pravda also noted, "that under conditions of war, these actions may blind the Pentagon and interfere with its usage of high-precision weapons against Russia´s armed forces."

In the Western press, Russia´s Pacific maneuvers have been depicted as a supportive gesture aimed at North Korea. But in reality the Russian exercises are aimed at combating American ships and troops. Should a crisis in Korea lead to a widened war, Russia will not fight on America´s side. It will fight on the side of Asian communism. This is the context in which we are to understand Russia´s role in offering nuclear and other WMD assistance to America´s enemies.

The recent statements of the Romanian defector, Gen. Ion Mihai Pacepa, are highly instructive in this regard. In an August 21 Washington Times editorial, Pacepa explained that Russia was behind Iraq´s weapons of mass destruction. Russia set up Iraq´s WMD programs, and Russia has taken the lead in hiding these programs if only to mask its own involvement. "As a former Romanian spy chief who used to take orders from the Soviet KGB, it is perfectly obvious to me that Russia is behind the evanescence of Saddam Hussein´s weapons of mass destruction," wrote Pacepa.

Here is the key to the global WMD problem. As Pacepa noted, "The Soviet Union and all its bloc states always had a standard operating procedure for deep sixing weapons of mass destruction - in Romanian it was codenamed ´Sarindar,´ meaning ´emergency exit.´" The idea was to rid collapsing client states of all trace of WMDs so that U.S. forces would find nothing. "We wanted to make sure they would never be traced back to us," Pacepa wrote, "and we also wanted to frustrate the West by not giving them anything they could make propaganda with."

During Pacepa´s tenure as a Romania´s spy chief, WMD support was going to Libya. Anyone accusing Moammar Gadhafi of possessing chemical weapons would be ridiculed," Pacepa explained. "Lies, all lies! Come to Libya and see! Our Western left-wing organizations, like the World Peace Council, existed for sole purpose of spreading the propaganda we gave them. These very same groups bray the exact same themes to this day."

And so they do. The international communist movement that supposedly went belly-up in 1991 yet remains in place, behind countless left-wing front groups. It performs its traditional function without meeting anti-communist opposition, which has all but dried up. Americans need to know that the organizational core of the anti-war movement at home and abroad is leftist and communist-dominated. Pacepa tells us that the Soviet bloc relied on the radical left to organize "large street demonstrations in Western Europe over America´s war-mongering whenever we wanted to distract world attention from the crimes of the vicious regimes we sponsored."

Little has changed since the fall of the Soviet Union. Russia still prepares for a future world war with America. The Kremlin still arms America´s enemies with weapons of mass destruction. The same leftist radicals serve up the same big lie. Did the Bush administration deceive the American people about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq? Pacepa believes that Iraq had its own "Sarindar" plan for evacuating its WMDs in advance of the U.S. invasion. This is a perfectly reasonable assumption. But today we are treated to a drumbeat in the press, on television and elsewhere, accusing the United States of imperial self-aggrandizement. We are told that the Bush administration lied to the American people. We are told that the war wasn´t about mass destruction weapons. It was about oil. How many times in a week does the average American hear this accusation against the government? "The United States won a brilliant military victory," noted Pacepa, "demolishing a dictatorship without destroying the country, but it has begun losing the peace." The big lie has taken hold in Europe and the rest of the world. Future American aggressions are predicted. Meanwhile, Russia continues its treacherous schemes in the Far East where the North Koreans have thumbed their nose at the U.S., promising to produce nuclear weapons like sausages.

The game that Russia is playing should be obvious to everyone.

Indictment Shows Washington Is ´Israeli-Occupied Territory´

Pentagon analyst Larry Franklin´s espionage case has uncovered a spy nest at the top

The indictment [.pdf file] of Larry Franklin, the 58-year-old analyst who headed up the Pentagon´s Iran desk, marks a milestone in the FBI´s four-year-plus probe into Israel´s covert activities in the U.S. The investigation predates 9/11 and involves some of the leading figures associated with planning and agitating for the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The players: a hardline faction of the administration committed to "regime change" not only in Iraq, but throughout the Middle East. Skilled at the art of bureaucratic infighting and relentlessly determined, even as the neocons´ plan for the invasion and occupation of Iraq was being implemented they were planning to put the next phase of their grand plan for the Middle East into operation: a confrontation with Iran.

At the Iran desk, Larry Franklin was the perfect patsy, the neocons´ gofer who was in a position to not only fight for their policies but also to provide them with sensitive intelligence [.pdf]. And that´s where the bureaucratic turf wars that raged throughout this administration, between the neocons and the "realists," crossed the line into… treason.

The indictment lists two unindicted co-conspirators, identifying them only as "CC1" and "CC2," but we know from numerous news accounts that they refer to Steve Rosen, AIPAC´s longtime public policy director, and Keith Weissman, the lobby´s Iran specialist. For two years, the indictment charges, Franklin "did unlawfully, knowingly, and willingly conspire, confederate, and agree, together with persons known and unknown to the Grand Jury, to communicate, deliver, and transmit information relating to the national defense to CC-1 and CC-2, persons not entitled to receive such information, with reason to believe that such information could be used to the injury of the United States and to the advantage of a foreign nation."

That foreign nation is the state of Israel, a country passionately interested in U.S. policy toward Iran – and aggressively pursuing a campaign to glean all the information it can about the making of that policy in a clear effort to shape it. The indictment shows how the Israelis used AIPAC for that purpose.

It also shows the extraordinary access AIPAC has to U.S. government officials. All Steve Rosen had to do, one summer day in 2002, was put in a call to "DoD Employee A" and ask for someone with expertise on Iran, and he was promptly given Franklin´s name.

Rosen and Weissman set up a meeting with Franklin and another Pentagon policy wonk ("DoD Employee B"), and pretty soon the rudiments of a spy nest were being constructed by the defendant and his co-conspirators. The indictment relates an intercepted phone conversation in which Rosen chortles excitedly en route to a meeting with Franklin that he´s got "a real insider," "a Pentagon guy" on the hook. At that meeting, Franklin discloses "national defense information" to Rosen and Weissman: the two AIPACers then take the information and feed it to an unidentified journalist. That reporter is Glenn Kessler of the Washington Post – who was also of interest to prosecutors on the trail of who leaked CIA officer Valerie Plame´s name to the media.

What was in it for Franklin? He is widely believed to be an ideological neoconservative and passionately devoted to Israel´s cause, but there was also the chance for a promotion. After proving his usefulness to the Israelis, by the winter of February 2003 Franklin and Rosen were already talking about getting him a position on the National Security Council staff: Franklin would be "by the elbow of the president," said Rosen. Franklin asked Rosen to "put in a good word" for him, and Rosen said "I´ll do what I can," remarking that their previous meeting had been "a real eye-opener."

From what we know about this particular breakfast meeting, Franklin handed over a draft of a presidential "finding," an internal policy paper that would set out the parameters of our actions vis-à-vis Iran. The indictment further relates that Franklin "disclosed to [Rosen] and [Weissman] national defense information relating to" the document.

Franklin and his AIPAC friends certainly acted like espionage agents. At one point, they met at Union Station in Washington, D.C., early in the morning:

"In the course of the meeting, the three men moved from one restaurant to another restaurant and then finished the meeting in an empty restaurant."

If these were just three guys out to discuss U.S.-Israel relations over lunch, why all the cloak-and-dagger stuff? They obviously suspected they were being followed: with justification, as it turns out. Franklin insisted on faxing materials to Rosen´s residence rather than the AIPAC office: no need to take unnecessary risks.

They were careful when it came to the possibility of being followed but threw caution to the winds when talking on the phone. They probably never suspected the FBI was listening: after all, in order to tap someone´s phone, the cops have to go to a real live judge and come up with some compelling evidence that it´s necessary. Apparently, the FBI had no trouble meeting that standard.

Rosen was apparently quite a braggart: in a conversation with a journalist about the purloined internal policy paper, he confessed, "I´m not supposed to know this" and averred that it was a "considerable story." His braggadocio may be his undoing, however, as this conversation helps make the case that Rosen knew he was breaking the law.

Rosen and Weissman soon passed their prize acquisition directly over to the Israelis: on Aug. 15, 2002, Naor Gilon, chief political officer at the Israeli embassy in Washington, met with Franklin at a Washington, D.C., restaurant, where Gilon explained to Franklin that "he would be the appropriate person with whom the defendant should talk" – that is, if he had anything really pressing to say. A month later, Franklin called the embassy, and they handed him over to Gilon. They met again on Jan. 30, 2003, after months of playing phone tag, at an unspecified location near the Israeli embassy building in Washington, where they discussed Iran´s nuclear program. They met regularly from February through May and throughout the summer, sometimes at the Pentagon Officers Athletic Club; the focus seemed to be on Iran´s nuclear program and the U.S. response. At one point, Gilon arranged for Franklin to meet with "former" top Mossad official Uzi Arad, now head of the Herziliya Center in Israel. The three of them chatted about Iran´s nukes.

There are intriguing references sprinkled throughout the indictment that provide the skeleton of a spy thriller: in late February of 2004, Gilon and Franklin exchanged phone calls "about certain foreign organizations." In June, they met at a Washington, D.C., coffeehouse where "Franklin provided [Gilon] with classified information he had learned from a classified United States government document related to a Middle Eastern country´s activities in Iraq." Later that month, Gilon brought along "another official from Foreign Nation A," namely Israel, and Franklin provided additional information about the military situation in Iraq, as well as copies of a speech and a "list of questions that a senior United States government official was to give that day or the next before the Congressional Foreign Affairs Committee." This has to mean the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations closed briefing on Iraq given by Colin Powell on June 23. At some point between December 2003 and June 2004, the two met at "an unknown location," where Franklin spilled the beans about "a weapons test conducted by a Middle Eastern country."

In trying to piece together what we know from the indictments and news reports, there are discrepancies: for example, it is hard to say where exactly this description of a lunch between Gilon, Rosen, Weissman, and Franklin fits in: Newsweek has Gilon at the scene, but the indictment doesn´t mention it. The key event, from which several charges emanate, was a June 26, 2003, luncheon in Arlington, Va., near Washington, where Franklin met his AIPAC co-spies and started off by saying, "You set the agenda." Rosen told him he understood that "the constraints" placed on Franklin when he met with them were considerable, but apparently all concerned let these go by the board as Franklin revealed an alleged threat to American (and Israeli) troops in Iraq and Kurdistan supposedly emanating from Iran. Franklin told his co-conspirators that information was "highly classified" and warned them not to use it. In the laconic prose of the indictment, he also revealed classified information "related to the intelligence reporting activities of a foreign nation," and again told them to keep it to themselves. Could this be the information that the U.S. had broken the Iranian code and was reading Tehran´s internal government communications – information that later got back to Ahmed Chalabi´s boys and, through them, was passed on to the Iranians? We just don´t know yet, but the prospect is intriguing and not at all unlikely, as Warren Strobel of Knight Ridder has reported:

"Several U.S. officials and law enforcement sources said Thursday that the scope of the FBI probe of Pentagon intelligence activities appeared to go well beyond the Franklin matter. FBI agents have briefed top White House, Pentagon, and State Department officials on the probe in recent days. Based on those briefings, officials said, the bureau appears to be looking into other controversies that have roiled the Bush administration, some of which also touch Feith´s office.

"They include how the Iraqi National Congress, a former exile group backed by the Pentagon, allegedly received highly classified U.S. intelligence on Iran; the leaking of the name of CIA officer Valerie Plame to reporters; and the production of bogus documents suggesting that Iraq tried to buy uranium for nuclear weapons from the African country of Niger. Bush repeated the Niger claim in making the case for war against Iraq.

"´The whole ball of wax´ was how one U.S. official privy to the briefings described the inquiry."

After the June 26 meeting, Rosen and Weissman talked between themselves about the gold mine of information they had in Franklin: Rosen marveled at the "highly classified" nature of what he had told them and remarked that it was "quite a story." He also told Weissman: "Well, look, it seems to me that this channel is one to keep wide open insofar as possible." Weissman said he was going to be taking Franklin to a baseball game, to which Rosen replied: "Smart guy. That´s the thing to do."

Yeah, especially if you´re milking this guy for all the classified information he can lay his hands on. Befriend him. Make him feel comfortable, like part of a team – Israel´s team, that is.

Aside from the unremarkable fact that Israel is spying on its alleged best friend, stealing our secrets and trying to influence policy in any way it can, why is any of this important? Because, as Michael Isikoff and Mark Hosenball point out in Newsweek:

"Franklin was known to be one of a tightly knit group of pro-Israel hawks in the Pentagon associated with his immediate superior, William Luti, the hard-charging and impassioned protegé of former House speaker Newt Gingrich. As deputy assistant secretary of defense for Near East affairs, Luti was a key player in planning the Iraq war. He, in turn, works in the office of Undersecretary Douglas Feith, a career lawyer who, before he became the Pentagon´s No. 3, was a sometime consultant for Likud, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon´s political party."

Feith´s staff is a nexus of neocon activity in this administration: they were the spark plugs behind the "Office of Special Plans," which fed phony "intelligence" on Iraq´s alleged WMD to the White House and Congress via Ahmed Chalabi´s Iraqi National Congress and other equally dubious sources. When the CIA wouldn´t cooperate in cooking the intelligence according to the neocons´ recipe for war, they simply set up their own parallel intelligence-gathering "rogue" operation, a "lie factory," as one article describing its activities put it, churning out half-baked rationales for invading Iraq. This is a favorite neocon method: acting under color of authority of the U.S. government when they have no authorization or legal right to do so. Franklin was involved with his colleague Harold Rhode and Pentagon consultant Michael Ledeen in another such "rogue" operation: setting up a series of meetings in Paris and Rome with Manucher Ghorbanifar, the Iranian arms dealer of Iran-Contra fame, to get behind a plan for "regime change" in Iran. This whole crowd was deeply involved in lying us into war and the effort to pull off a similar scenario when it comes to Iran.

Did the neocon network in Washington allow itself to become an instrument of Israeli espionage against the United States? Franklin´s arrest and the disclosure of his activities – or some of them – in the indictment raises this question, albeit not for the first time. Who is "DoD employee A" – the one who referred Rosen to Franklin to begin with? And what about "DoD employee B," who inexplicably turned up at Franklin´s first meeting with Rosen and Weissman?

It´s just not credible that Franklin is alone in his disloyalty. He was and is part of a larger group actively committed to a very specific ideological bias, one that valorizes the role of Israel in spurring the U.S. to bolder action in the Middle East. That this agenda redounds to the advantage of the Israelis is due, we are told, to the natural confluence of interests, and is not the result of a determined effort – overt or covert – on the part of the Israelis. However, Franklin´s arrest and the public revelation of his spying on behalf of Israel demonstrates once and for all that these denials are hogwash.

As AIPAC´s top officials snuck around our nation´s capital with Franklin in tow, meeting clandestinely and whispering secrets in the dark, that organization´s role as a cover for Israeli covert activities was crystal clear to the FBI agents tailing them – and now we know it, too. As AIPAC reached into the Pentagon and turned a highly placed official into a spy, promising to use the lobbying group´s legendary influence to secure him a big promotion, Pat Buchanan´s famous description of Washington as "Israeli-occupied territory" no longer seems over the top.

In ripping up and exposing Israel´s Washington spy nest, federal prosecutors will be disturbing all kinds of unpleasant nocturnal creatures. If you pick up a big rock, you never know what´s going to scuttle out – and this trial, scheduled to start Sept. 6, is sure to give us a few surprises. One thing that won´t surprise me, however, is a widening investigation – and more indictments.

Did Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon vow to burn Palestinian children and rape Arabic girls? Did former Israeli leader Menachem Begin refer to Palestinians as “two-legged beasts,” and did another Israeli leader declare that all Arabs must be killed unless they are willing to live as slaves?

No, but given the number of Web sites repeating these allegations, it is easy to see how this nonsense has gained credence. Indeed, the attribution of invidious statements to Israel’s leaders has become a popular stratagem among Israel’s enemies. Many are fabricated, taken out of context or otherwise manipulated to present a distorted, negative view of Zionist intentions and actions. Propagated on the internet, some of these misquotes eventually make their way into opinion columns in campus newspapers and even, on occasion, the mainstream press.

Take for example, the following quote (found on anti-Israel Web sites) alleged to have been said by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to the Israeli parliament in October 2001 and reported on Kol Yisrael radio:

Don´t worry about American pressure on Israel, we, the Jewish people control America, and the Americans know it.

The statement also appears as "I control America."

As it turns out, it is a hoax. Sharon never made either statement. Nor did Kol Yisrael ever report that he did.

Yet syndicated columnist Georgie Anne Geyer wrote in her May 10, 2002 opinion column, which appeared in the Chicago Tribune, San Diego Tribune, and other newspapers:

In fact, it [American support for Israel’‘s actions] led Prime Minister Sharon to tell his Cabinet recently, "I control America."

Where did this quote originate and how did it enter the mainstream media?

CAMERA’s investigation found that it started with an October 3, 2001 press release from the pro-Hamas group, IAP – the Islamic Association for Palestine, which attributed the quote to a report on “the Israeli Hebrew radio, Col [sic] Yisrael.”

In fact, Kol Yisrael political correspondent Yoni Ben-Menachem, who reports on Cabinet meetings, confirmed to CAMERA that he never made such a broadcast and that Sharon never made such a statement. Nor was it reported by any other news service.

When confronted, Geyer told one editor that she relied on two anonymous Israeli sources for the quotation. She told a second editor the quote came from an alleged Ha’aretz article which she never produced and could not be found. A subsequent editor’s note by Geyer’s United Press Syndicate claimed the quote was widely reported in the Palestinian press (i.e. the IAP, which cited the bogus Kol Yisrael source) but could not be confirmed by independent sources.

Indeed for many, the Internet has completely replaced libraries, reference books, and original research as a source of information. This reliance on unregulated, unaccountable sources has boosted the proliferation of misinformation and bogus quotes. And when they are repeated by journalists, albeit those with radical anti-Israel agendas, few are willing to search deeper.

Investigation: This quote was found on hundreds of Arab Web sites, and indeed, seems to be a a staple of anti-Israel propaganda. It cannot be found, however, in any text book, news article, or published record, nor is there any mention or record of a General Ouze Merham anywhere else. (Another giveaway is that the term “Palestinian” was not in use in 1956. It only came into vogue in the 1960´s.)

Student columnist Mariam Sobh used the quote in her December 11, 2003 Daily Illinicolumn, but later had to apologize.

Investigation: The source is found on Arab propaganda and Marxist Web sites. It gained credibility when Rocky Mountain News international editor, Holger Jensen, included it in an April 2002 column attacking Israeli Prime Minister Sharon. Four days later, Jensen was forced to recant, admitting he had “made a grievous error in not verifying the authenticity of 20-year-old quotes attributed to Ariel Sharon.” And shortly after that, Jensen “resigned to pursue other interests.”

In fact, Amos Oz has confirmed that he never met nor interviewed Sharon. The so-called “interview” was a literary device taken from Oz´s book In the Land of Israel.In the English version, the interviewee´s identity is not revealed, and is referred to as Z (Flamingo/Fontana 1983). Apparently, Palestinian propagandists substituted Sharon´s name for Z in the Davar interview. The description of Z does not fit Sharon, and at one point Z himself refers to Sharon, Begin and General Eitan.

Ariel Sharon, the Prime Minister of Israel, is currently facing possible war crime prosecutions for two massacres that occurred 20 years apart: the September 1982 massacre of Palestinian civilians in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in Lebanon, and the April 2002 Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) mass killings in the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank.

Sharon is, without doubt, guilty of these crimes against humanity, and others. He is also unrepentant. For him, these mass killings are merely necessary steps on the path toward his objective of a "Final Solution" to the "Palestinian problem," through the mass expulsion and/or extermination of the more than 3 million Palestinians and Arabs now living in Israel, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and the Golan Heights. Under various labels, Sharon and a rogues gallery of collaborators inside Israel, Britain, and the United States, are now moving toward the final phase of their "mass transfer" plans for the Palestinians and Arabs.

The Sharon File

Sharon was born in Kfar Malal in 1928. At the age of 14, he joined the Haganah, and at 20, headed an infantry company in the Alexandroni Brigade during the 1948 War of Independence, during which the Israeli forces drove an estimated 300,000 Palestinians from their land, using some of the same genocidal methods against unarmed civilian populations that were used in the recent IDF invasion of the Palestinian Authority´s Area A territory.

In 1953, Sharon founded "Unit 101," a secret death squad within the IDF that committed several mass murders of civilians. In October 1953, Sharon´s "Unit 101" massacred 66 innocent civilians during a cross-border raid into the Jordanian West Bank village of Qibya. Under intense machine-gun fire, local residents were driven into their homes, which were then blown up around them, killing the occupants by burying them alive in piles of rubble. The April 2002 IDF massacre at the Palestinian refugee camp in Jenin was, in fact, modeled on Sharon´s "Unit 101" operations at Qibya.

On Oct. 18, 1953, the U.S. State Department issued a bulletin denouncing the Qibya massacre, demanding that those responsible be "brought to account." Instead, Sharon was rewarded for his war crimes by having his "Unit 101" absorbed into the Israeli paratroop corps. By 1956, Sharon had been appointed paratroop brigade commander.

Between Feb. 28, 1955 and Oct. 10, 1956, a Sharon-led paratrooper brigade conducted similar cross-border invasions into Gaza, Egypt, and the West Bank in Jordan. At the West Bank village of Qalqilya, Sharon´s death squad killed 83 people.

During the 1956 joint British, Israeli, and French invasion of the Suez Canal, Sharon and his lifelong collaborator in mass murder, Rafael Eytan, carried out another horrific war crime: In three separate incidents, Sharon- and Eytan-led units murdered Egyptian prisoners of war, as well as civilian Sudanese workers who had been captured. All told, 273 unarmed prisoners were executed and dumped into mass graves. When the story broke, nearly 40 years later, in the Aug. 16, 1995 London Daily Telegraph, it nearly ruptured Israeli-Egyptian relations. This was less than three months before Sharon would bloody his hands once again, by orchestrating the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. Rabin, in Sharon´s eyes, had committed the mistake of signing a peace treaty with Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat.

During the 1960s, Sharon´s military career advanced. In 1964, he was appointed to head the IDF´s Northern Command; in 1966, he took charge of the Army Training Department; in 1969, he was named commander of the IDF´s Southern Command.

In 1972, at the urging of American organized crime figure and leading right-wing Zionist Meshulam Riklis, Sharon resigned from the IDF (he was recalled, briefly, to active duty during the 1973 Yom Kippur War) to run for the Knesset (parliament). Henceforth, Sharon would be wedded to leading international organized crime figures associated with the Meyer Lansky National Crime Syndicate in the United States, and allied Jewish mafia figures from Israel and Russia.

Even at the end of his career, Sharon was still running death squads. On Sept. 25, 1997, Israeli Television Channel One interviewed Benny Golan, a veteran of the Rimon Unit, which Sharon had created and deployed in the early 1970s in the Gaza Strip to carry out targetted assassinations of Palestinian "militants." Golan described the assassination program, and reported that members of the unit frequently "disguised themselves as Arabs" for "special operations." Other sources reported, at the time, that the "special operations" included terrorist attacks on Israeli Jewish targets to justify "retaliatory strikes" against pre-selected Palestinian and Arab targets.

Far from ending his career of mass butchery, Sharon´s resignation from the IDF coincided with the launching of an even more ambitious criminal enterprise that would see thousands of Palestinians killed and wounded as part of the "Eretz Israel," or "Greater Israel" drive to permanently annex all of the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and the Golan Heights—and resettle these areas with Russian and other Jewish immigrants, after the Palestinians have been eliminated.
´Landscam´

Sharon entered the Knesset in December 1973, at the very moment that the Israeli government lifted the ban on private sales of West Bank land to Israelis. The Knesset decision was brought about by a heavy lobbying effort by Sharon colleague and former Police Minister Yehezkel Sahar. The very first "private" purchase was for the construction of a residential community for retired IDF officers. The partners in the deal included Sahar, Gen. Reshavam Ze´evi, Sharon publicist Eli Landau, and Avraham Mintz, a founder of the fanatical settlers movement Gush Emunim.

In June 1974, Sharon personally led a group of settlers to establish an illegal outpost near the West Bank town of Nablus. It was the first of many such ventures that Sharon would sponsor, under the rhubric of the drive to "Judaize the territories."

Sharon´s political career continued to advance. In 1975, Prime Minister Rabin appointed Sharon as his personal security adviser. Then, the Likud was swept into power in the 1977 elections, and Prime Minister Menachim Begin named Sharon as Minister of Agriculture. In that capacity, Sharon launched a massive expansion of Jewish "agricultural settlements" throughout the West Bank and Gaza. During 1977-81, more than 25,000 new settlers—mostly members of the Gush Emunim—moved into the occupied territories. The Gush Emunim settlers formed into death squads explicitly modelled on Sharon´s old "Unit 101." They would play a pivotal role in a filthy Anglo-American Zionist criminal enterprise known as "Landscam."

In 1979, the Israeli Supreme Court ratified the private land purchases in the occupied territories, and immediately, Sharon´s mafia cronies set up several real estate ventures, under such names as Jumbo, Samarea and Judea, and Meteor. In 1980, Sharon and Yuval Ne´eman formed an organization, Prevention of Emergence of Another Arab Country in Eretz Israel (PEACE), to press the issue of permanent Israeli annexation of the occupied territories. The group included a number of notables from Israel and the United States, who would remain part of the extended Sharon mafia family for years to come: Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, Jewish Defense League (JDL) founder Joseph Churba, Young Israel director Harold Jacobs, Anti-Defamation League of B´nai Brith general counsel Arnold Forster, right-wing Knesset member and Rabbi Meir Kahane patron Geula Cohen, and Roni Milo.

Sharon toured the United States in 1980, lining up financing for a massive real estate grab. But first, Sharon launched a campaign of terror against the Palestinians in the West Bank, to literally scare them into leaving their land. In the Spring of 1982, Sharon hosted a planning meeting at his Negev desert ranch, which had been purchased for him by Riklis. Riklis, Henry Kissinger, Louis Mortimer Bloomfield, Rafi Eytan, General Ze´evi, Arieh Genger, Herbert Brin, and Eli Landau attended the session, according to an eyewitness account. Within days of the meeting, Gush Emunim and JDL terrorists began attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank. "Landscam" was under way.

"Landscam" coincided with Sharon´s invasion of Lebanon, which began on June 4, 1982, and was aimed at wiping out the Palestine Liberation Organization, which had established its base in several camps near Beirut. Between June 4 and Aug. 31, 1982, the IDF, under Sharon´s direction (Begin had named him Minister of Defense the previous year), killed a total of 19,025 Palestinians and wounded 30,032 in a military campaign that Sharon called "Operation Peace in Galilee." Under immense pressure from the Reagan Administration, Sharon abandoned plans to assassinate Arafat, and, on Aug. 21, 1982, he allowed the PLO to evacuate 15,600 fighters from Lebanon, under an American-brokered cease-fire.

On Sept. 15, Sharon broke the cease-fire agreement, and the next day, launched a "purification" campaign against the refugee camps of Sabra, Shatila, and Burj El Barajneh. Falangist death squads—protected by the IDF, which encircled the camps—massacred unarmed women, children, and elderly.

On Sept. 19, 1982, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 521, harshly condemning the massacres at the camps. In a distant mirror of the current genocide in Jenin, Ramallah, and Bethlehem, Sharon ignored the international condemnations. Today, Sharon faces war crimes prosecution in court in Belgium for his role in the Sabra and Shatila massacres, as the result of a lawsuit filed on June 18, 2001 by 23 survivors of the attacks.

On Oct. 15, 1982, a month after the 1982 massacres, Sharon held meetings—in the Chouf Mountains of Lebanon and at his Negev ranch—with Falange leader Camille Chamoun, Uri Dan, Rupert Murdoch, Charles Douglas-Home, and others, to move the "Landscam" West Bank real estate grab forward. On Nov. 15, 1982, a final meeting took place on several real estate purchases, mostly through Arab middle-men, to push the massive expansion of Jewish settlements throughout the West Bank—at a handsome profit. Attending the meeting at Sharon´s ranch were: Kissinger, Lord Harlech (Sir David Ormsby-Gore), Johannes von Thurn und Taxis, Tory Parliamentarian Julian Amery, Sir Edmund Peck, and MI-6 Mideast mandarin Nicholas Elliot.

The Kahane Commission, an Israeli body convened to investigate the Sabra and Shatila mass murders, found Sharon to be complicit in the crimes, and he was fired by Prime Minister Begin as Defense Minister shortly after the report´s release. But Sharon landed on his feet. In 1984, after the fall of the Begin government and the establishment of a Likud-Labor national unity government, Sharon was appointed Minister of Trade and Industry, a position he held until 1990, when he was named Minister of Construction and Housing, a post that enabled him to continue as the leading sponsor of the massive expansion of Jewish settlements in the occupied territories. During Sharon´s tenure in various government ministries, the number of Jewish settlers soared to more than 110,000.

In January 1986, Edgar Bronfman, the Jewish mafia don and president of the World Jewish Congress, admitted, in a New York Post interview, that he was negotiating on behalf of the Israeli government with Moscow, to secure Soviet permission for 400,000 Jews to emigrate to Israel—in return for massive shipments of grain to the Soviet Union. The deal was cynically dubbed "Jews for wheat," in recognition that this scheme was leading to the annexation of the occupied lands by Israel. A year earlier, in another sop to the American- and British-based Jewish criminal interests bankrolling Sharon´s "Judiazation" scheme, the Knesset had passed laws dropping all restrictions on cash flows into Israeli banks—so long as the money was invested in Israel.
Hamas: Another Sharon Asset

During his postings in the Likud governments during 1977-92, Sharon had not only been the "rabbi" of the Gush Emunim and Kach Movement/JDL Jewish underground terrorist organizations. He also played a pivotal role in the creation of Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group, which was formally founded in 1988. Under the Israeli military occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, an estimated 800 "licenses" were handed out to Palestinians, to create schools, infirmaries, food kitchens, and other social service programs. Sharon made sure that all these licenses were given to Islamists, many of whom would be Hamas founders, as a way of creating a "countergang" ruling structure to eventually supplant the power of the PLO inside the occupied territories. Sharon´s sponsorship of Hamas has become a public scandal in recent months, particularly since the publication of stories in EIR in the past year, exposing these links, and detailing Sharon´s plans to use Hamas as part of his "Jordan is Palestine" drive for mass transfer.
Killing the ´Peace of the Brave´

When Rabin was elected Prime Minister of Israel in 1992, the former Sharon ally in the war on the Palestinians had the courage to admit that his underlying assumptions were wrong, and would lead to the destruction of Israel. He entered into secret peace talks with Arafat, which culminated in the August 1993 signing of the Oslo Peace Accords, in the presence of U.S. President William Clinton at the White House.

Instantly, Sharon declared war on the Oslo Accords and on Prime Minister Rabin. The entire "Landscam" gang joined Sharon in assailing the peace initiative. On Sept. 11, 1993, Kissinger told CBS News interviewers that Oslo was "unworkable." Several weeks later, Kissinger told the Institute for Jewish Affairs in London that Jordan would soon fall into the hands of Islamic fundamentalists and Olso would be crushed—a not-so-veiled reference to Sharon´s Hamas assets, which would soon launch a terror wave against Oslo in tandem with Sharon´s Jewish underground.

On Oct. 11, 1993, Bertram and Herbert Zweibon, co-founders of Americans for a Safe Israel, a Sharonist front, held a conference in Crystal City, Virginia to launch a campaign to destroy Oslo—and its sponsors. Five days later, Sharon delivered a speech calling for the settlers to launch a resistance to the sellout.

Sharon rushed to the United States and embarked on a nationwide tour on Nov. 14, 1993, in which he declared that the 150,000 Jewish settlers were the "only barrier to a Palestinian state." Sharon was accompanied, throughout the tour, by Yechial Leiter, a leader of the JDL in the West Bank settlement of Kiryat Arba. While in the United States, Sharon raised millions of dollars for the Kiryat Arba "resistance" from such right-wing Zionist patrons as Florida and California bingo parlor magnate Irving Moscowitz and former Reagan Administration Ambassador to Austria and perfume heir, Ronald Lauder.

Sharon´s fundraising paid off. On Feb. 25, 1994, Baruch Goldstein, an IDF reservist and leader of Kiryat Arba, massacred 50 Palestinian worshipers at the Cave of the Patriarch holy site. Goldstein had been Rabbi Meir Kahane´s Knesset campaign manager at Kiryat Arba.

In March 1994, some 200 rabbis, led by Avraham Shapira, staged a rally at Kiryat Arba and issued a religious edict, ordering resistance against any attempt by the Rabin government to dismantle any settlements. On March 31, 1994, Sharon and Yitzhak Shamir, the former Likud Prime Minister and Stern Gang terrorist, led a rally of 10,000 people attacking Oslo. ADL National Chairman Abe Foxman told the Jerusalem Post on April 2, 1994 that Rabin was "undermining organized Jewish clout" in America, through his peace antics.

Rabin was assassinated on Nov. 4, 1995 by a West Bank settler, Yigal Amir, who came from Sharon´s terror hub, Kiryat Arba.

On Jan. 26, 1997, Sharon returned, triumphal, to Kiryat Arba, to deliver new marching orders to the heirs of "Unit 101." If Arafat declared a unilateral Palestinian state in the territory of the West Bank and Gaza under Palestinian Authority control, the settlers should join in the drive to annex all of Judea and Samaria. At the time, Sharon was Minister of National Infrastructure, a super-ministerial post that had been created for him by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Sharon´s sometimes ally and sometimes rival for power in the Likud. During 1996-99, Sharon´s tenure as Minister of National Infrastructure, the settlers population in the occupied territories soared to more than 200,000.

Netanyahu´s fall from power in 1999, and his replacement by a Labor government headed by former IDF chief Ehud Barak, signalled that the Oslo peace process that Sharon was dedicated to destroying, was back on the table.

After the failure of the July 2000 Camp David II negotiations to reach a final settlement, more intense private negotiations between the Barak government and the Palestinian Authority began under a number of venues. Talks took place in New York City, and later, at the resort of Taba, Egypt, producing a final accord, in draft, that would have formed a just and viable basis for two sovereign states, Israel and Palestine. The thorny issues of the right of return of Palestinian refugees, the status of the holy sites in Jerusalem, and of creating two capitals within the extended city limits of Jerusalem, were, according to several Arab and Israeli diplomatic sources, worked out in principle by January 2001. These final points, memorialized in the talking points brought to the final sessions by President Clinton, could be revived today as a basis for reaching a just solution, in the view of many Mideast diplomats familiar with the document.

But Sharon and his backers would have nothing of this.

In September 2000, Sharon visited New York City, where he met with Lauder and other supporters and financiers. He returned to Israel, reportedly with a large amount of cash to be disbursed to settlers´ terrorist cells. Sharon personally staged the decisive provocation, by visiting the Islamic holy sites on al-Haram al-Sharif, what the Israelis call the Temple Mount, on Sept. 26, 2000. Sharon was accompanied by more than 1,000 Israeli troops and paramilitary police. It was a flagrant provocation, an assertion of Israeli permanent control over the sacred sites of Islam, the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

With that visit, Sharon provoked the "Al Aqsa Intifada," and within days, the entire Holy Land was again awash in the blood of Palestinian protesters. By January 2001, the Barak government would fall, and, on Feb. 6, 2001, Sharon, who had taken over the Likud party in September 1999, was elected Prime Minister of Israel, ready to launch his final drive for "Greater Israel." Investigation: While nothing was found in the source given, there was an account in the following day’s edition of the Jerusalem Post. When examined in context, it no longer sounds racist. Katsav was specifically talking about the brutal murders by Palestinian terrorists of two young schoolboys. The remains of Kobi Mandel and Yossi Ish-Ran, who had played hooky from school to explore a cave, were found on May 9, 2001. The Jerusalem Post clearly placed Katsav’s words in that context:

President Moshe Katsav said yesterday that Israel would never stoop to the brutality the Palestinians displayed in the stoning to death of two Tekoa teenagers this week.

"There is a huge gap between us and our enemies - not just in ability but in morality, culture, sanctity of life, and conscience," Katsav told reporters at Beit Hanassi.

"We would never stoop to the kind of brutality inflicted on the victims in Tekoa and Ofra," he added. "They´re our neighbors here, but it seems as if at a distance of a few hundred meters away, there are people who don´t belong to our continent, to our world, but actually belong to a different galaxy."

Katsav said Israel must change its approach to the Palestinians, but stopped short of voicing exactly what that new approach should be -- although he appeared to imply that retaliation is at times necessary.

"Force is no solution to anything," he said, "but sometimes it´s essential."

Referring to the brutal murders of two young boys from Tekoa, Katsav said he is sure there are Palestinians and other Moslems who oppose terrorism, but it was terrifying to realize how much cruelty and hatred the Palestinians harbor against Israelis. (Jerusalem Post, May 11, 2001)
