Cut some big green branches about the size of my wrist, about four feet long. Make one end smaller for holding onto, by shaving it with a knife or ax. Cut up old sheets into strips. (Saved for years) Soak in kerosene. Wrap sheet around the big ends of the green sticks. Result will look like a giant swab. Attach a bracket on the wall. Insert the small end of the stick into the bracket, so there is at least two feet between the wall and the end of the stick with wrapped sheets soaked in kerosene. Light the end. Torch. Heat and light. For flammable walls, build up a layer of block behind the torch.

So, what action, and planning proved to be most effective according to historians "from your time", OP? We scattered into the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains for 17 years. There were occasionally other people we met, passers by and such. They shared any news they might have heard, and we shared our food and shelter. We lived off of the land and hunted most days. Storing our food in caves with snow that never melted if it wasn't in the sun. The hunting was sparse but enough to get us by along with our food stores. We had access to fresh water and water filtration. Lived in a cabin and chopped much firewood for our stove which heated the cabin and cooked our meals. You really have to age your firewood, at least 2 years. Most people think you can just cut it and burn it right away. I will admit I never had to start a fire, my father had a box of several hundred lighters and matches and flint and fuel. Basically anything we would ever need to start a fire, but sometimes simple kindling was hard to come by. We burned the pages of many books crumpled up to start fires. We hated burning books, so of course we ranked them most favorite to least favorite. Then we didn't feel quite so bad that it would be a book we would miss. No Internet is not so bad; human beings have been living without the Internet since the dawn of time up to maybe 50 years ago at the most. Before the Internet, people would dress up nice and talk to one another face to face, over meals and visits to each others' homes. They used instruments of wood to make music and told stories to one another over a meal together. What a novel idea. Get used to a Victorian era lifestyle, bathing out of a bowl and using chamber pots. Get a horse for transportation, or a couple people to carry you in a litter or rickshaw, or your feet, and you will be outside for most of the day. Getting your survival documents - your 21st century tablets or dead sea scrolls -- in a secure time capsule or treasure chest, hidden, is a good plan in case your memory fades along with your computer. Seriously do you think you have to live like a caveman when the lights go out? Get some bees, make some candles to sell.
