I jumped horses in my youth. It's such a mind thing. If you don't think you can make the jump the horse seems to pick up on it and you won't. Anyone that does this for fun is brave compared to most. Believe that.

Show Jumping and Eventing is up there among the most dangerous sports. I used to show jump and compete in the A circuit on the East Coast in my teen years. I had a pretty horrific accident while jumping almost 10 years ago that changed my life. I still love horses and still ride, but I no longer jump. It's just not worth it.

I hope she recovers well. I'm sure it's going to be a while before she wants to get back in the saddle. It took me nearly 6 years to get the courage to get back in the saddle.

I'm sure she didn't tack her horse personally, so I'd be looking to the assistant or groom as to why that saddle slipped! I've never had that happen except when the girth wasn't tightened after walking the horse a bit when the saddle is put on...

At that level, the horses are totally natural jumpers, they are bred for it, they love to jump or they wouldn't do it. It's actually pretty hard to "force" a horse to do anything, and if you train them that way you're going to get awful results. Good trainers just encourage horses and bring out the best of their natural abilities. Horses are smart and want to have something to do! They want to learn new things and they enjoy their own athleticism.
