THE .45 COLT SUCKS!! HERESY?!? LISTEN UP BEFORE YOU BLOW A GASKET.
The .45 Colt sucks! Heresy? Listen-up before you blow a gasket!

American Handgunner,
March-April, 2005
by Mike Venturino

When our exalted editorship was telling me Smith & Wesson asked what caliber they might consider as a follow-up to the very successful return of the Model 21 .44 Special we unveiled on the cover of Handgunner (Nov/Dec 2004), he said his vote was for the exact same gun but in .45 Colt. I said, "Bah, humbug!" Not exactly the best way to get a raise, but its my version of the truth. (Editor's note: What Duke actually said, with a big sigh, was, "If you had any sense, you'd know what I'm talking about. How'd you ever get to be the editor, anyway?" Just so you know.)

Unless your purpose is to load with black powder or to fulfill a sense of nostalgia, no one with any sense would pick the .45 Colt over the .45 Auto-Rim/.45 ACP for a revolver cartridge. There are the guys who buy the big Rugers and stoke them up with super-stout loads. Hell, the reloading manuals even have special sections on loading the .45 Colt to high pressures especially for Rugers. That's turning the .45 Colt into sort of a .45 Magnum, and not what I mean at all.

That's a really good article.

If you like the .45ACP you'll appreciate his logic. All the benefits of the .45ACP in a revolver without having to use the moon clips. And if you need to use .45ACP in it, you can use moon clips! It's quite possibly the best CC option for me. I love the .45ACP and I love revolvers. Having a pistol that can take both and be as concealable and reliable as a medium sized revolver can be is about to become my new Grail. Thanks GLP, you led me too this ^_^.

Time to stump for the .45AR and build something beautiful.

I like my .45LC for home defense.

Plenty of power to take out the bad guys but it won't go through 2 or 3 walls and hit a family member.

Colt .45 wheel guns are pretty intimidating, but when the 1911 came on the scene everyone opted for the semi over the wheel. I own both, and find the 1911 more accurate with the slower .45 round.
No one really makes an affordable .45 wheel gun any more, and the .357 fits the bill for more pistol owners - it has the stopping power, plus it's dual purpose (it fires the .38 round as well).

Yeah, the .357 is about as perfect a revolver cartridge as you can ask for.

Umm, you've seen drywall right? A .45 Colt will penetrate more than 3 sheets. If you miss inside a house there's ALWAYS the risk of hitting someone that you're not intending too.

The .45AR/ACP revolver is good for me because I'm trying to keep it at one caliber. For my purposes the revolver chambering would be an excellent choice for concealment. The smaller profile of the grip/frame is excellent for work or hot weather. Wearing a vest everyday does get a little old.

Bumping your thread back up, because I killed it deader than a Model 21 .44 special, a .45 Colt, a 45 Magnum, or a 357. peace
